6 years agox86/mm/pti: Keep permissions when cloning kernel text in pti_clone_kernel_text()
Joerg Roedel [Wed, 18 Jul 2018 09:41:05 +0000 (11:41 +0200)]
x86/mm/pti: Keep permissions when cloning kernel text in pti_clone_kernel_text()

Mapping the kernel text area to user-space makes only sense if it has the
same permissions as in the kernel page-table.  If permissions are different
this will cause a TLB reload when using the kernel page-table, which is as
good as not mapping it at all.

On 64-bit kernels this patch makes no difference, as the whole range cloned
by pti_clone_kernel_text() is mapped RO anyway. On 32 bit there are
writeable mappings in the range, so just keep the permissions as they are.

Joerg Roedel [Wed, 18 Jul 2018 09:41:04 +0000 (11:41 +0200)]
x86/mm/pti: Make pti_clone_kernel_text() compile on 32 bit

The pti_clone_kernel_text() function references __end_rodata_hpage_align,
which is only present on x86-64.  This makes sense as the end of the rodata
section is not huge-page aligned on 32 bit.

Nevertheless a symbol is required for the function that points at the right
address for both 32 and 64 bit. Introduce __end_rodata_aligned for that
purpose and use it in pti_clone_kernel_text().

x86/pgtable: Move two more functions from pgtable_64.h to pgtable.h

These two functions are required for PTI on 32 bit:

* pgdp_maps_userspace()

Joerg Roedel [Wed, 18 Jul 2018 09:40:47 +0000 (11:40 +0200)]
x86/entry/32: Handle Entry from Kernel-Mode on Entry-Stack

It is possible that the kernel is entered from kernel-mode and on the
entry-stack. The most common way this happens is when an exception is
triggered while loading the user-space segment registers on the
kernel-to-userspace exit path.

The segment loading needs to be done after the entry-stack switch, because
the stack-switch needs kernel %fs for per_cpu access.

When this happens, make sure to leave the kernel with the entry-stack
again, so that the interrupted code-path runs on the right stack when
switching to the user-cr3.

Detect this condition on kernel-entry by checking CS.RPL and %esp, and if
it happens, copy over the complete content of the entry stack to the
task-stack.  This needs to be done because once the exception handler is
entereed, the task might be scheduled out or even migrated to a different
CPU, so this cannot rely on the entry-stack contents. Leave a marker in the
stack-frame to detect this condition on the exit path.

On the exit path the copy is reversed, copy all of the remaining task-stack
back to the entry-stack and switch to it.

The stack address doesn't need to be stored in tss.sp0 if the stack is

makes sense when its location is changed in later patches.

x86/events/intel/ds: Fix bts_interrupt_threshold alignment

Markus reported that BTS is sporadically missing the tail of the trace
in the perf_event data buffer: [decode error (1): instruction overflow]
shown in GDB; and bisected it to the conversion of debug_store to PTI.

A little "optimization" crept into alloc_bts_buffer(), which mistakenly
placed bts_interrupt_threshold away from the 24-byte record boundary.
Intel SDM Vol 3B 17.4.9 says "This address must point to an offset from
the BTS buffer base that is a multiple of the BTS record size."

Revert "max" from a byte count to a record count, to calculate the
bts_interrupt_threshold correctly: which turns out to fix problem seen.

reiserfs: fix buffer overflow with long warning messages

ReiserFS prepares log messages into a 1024-byte buffer with no bounds

userspace passes a crafted mount options string, overflow this buffer.

The reason is that the length of the new brk is not page aligned when we
try to populate the it.  There is no reason to bug on that though.
do_brk_flags already aligns the length properly so the mapping is
expanded as it should.  All we need is to tell mm_populate about it.
Besides that there is absolutely no reason to to bug_on in the first
place.  The worst thing that could happen is that the last page wouldn't
get populated and that is far from putting system into an inconsistent
state.

Fix the issue by moving the length sanitization code from do_brk_flags
up to vm_brk_flags.  The only other caller of do_brk_flags is brk
syscall entry and it makes sure to provide the proper length so t here
is no need for sanitation and so we can use do_brk_flags without it.

Also remove the bogus BUG_ONs.

The mmu_gather APIs keep track of the invalidated address range

covered by page tables but not ptes (and therefore no TLBs) still need

Architectures which don't cache intermediate page table entries, or

Vlastimil Babka [Fri, 13 Jul 2018 23:58:56 +0000 (16:58 -0700)]
fs/proc/task_mmu.c: fix Locked field in /proc/pid/smaps*

Thomas reports:
"While looking around in /proc on my v4.14.52 system I noticed that all
processes got a lot of "Locked" memory in /proc/*/smaps. A lot more
memory than a regular user can usually lock with mlock().

Commit 493b0e9d945f (in v4.14-rc1) seems to have changed the behavior
  of "Locked".

Before that commit the code was like this. Notice the VM_LOCKED check.

           (vma->vm_flags & VM_LOCKED) ?
                (unsigned long)(mss.pss >> (10 + PSS_SHIFT)) : 0);

After that commit Locked is now the same as Pss:

  (unsigned long)(mss->pss >> (10 + PSS_SHIFT)));

  This looks like a mistake."

Indeed, the commit has added mss->pss_locked with the correct value that
depends on VM_LOCKED, but forgot to actually use it.  Fix it.

6 years agomm: do not drop unused pages when userfaultd is running
Christian Borntraeger [Fri, 13 Jul 2018 23:58:52 +0000 (16:58 -0700)]
mm: do not drop unused pages when userfaultd is running

KVM guests on s390 can notify the host of unused pages.  This can result
in pte_unused callbacks to be true for KVM guest memory.

If a page is unused (checked with pte_unused) we might drop this page
instead of paging it.  This can have side-effects on userfaultd, when
the page in question was already migrated:

The next access of that page will trigger a fault and a user fault
instead of faulting in a new and empty zero page.  As QEMU does not
expect a userfault on an already migrated page this migration will fail.

The most straightforward solution is to ignore the pte_unused hint if a
userfault context is active for this VMA.

6 years agomm: zero unavailable pages before memmap init
Pavel Tatashin [Sat, 14 Jul 2018 13:15:07 +0000 (09:15 -0400)]
mm: zero unavailable pages before memmap init

We must zero struct pages for memory that is not backed by physical
memory, or kernel does not have access to.

Recently, there was a change which zeroed all memmap for all holes in
e820.  Unfortunately, it introduced a bug that is discussed here:

  https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-mm/msg156764.html

Linus, also saw this bug on his machine, and confirmed that reverting
commit 124049decbb1 ("x86/e820: put !E820_TYPE_RAM regions into
memblock.reserved") fixes the issue.

The problem is that we incorrectly zero some struct pages after they
were setup.

The fix is to zero unavailable struct pages prior to initializing of
struct pages.

A more detailed fix should come later that would avoid double zeroing
cases: one in __init_single_page(), the other one in
zero_resv_unavail().

means that the old Android tools will break when using a new kernel

From kernel v4.13 onwards, during which TGID was introduced, tracing
with systrace on all Android kernels will break (most Android kernels
have been on 4.9 with Android patches, so this issues hasn't been seen
yet). From v4.13 onwards things will break.

The chrome browser's tracing tools also embed the systrace viewer which
uses the legacy TGID format and updates to that are known to be
difficult to make.

Considering this, I suggest we make this change to the upstream kernel
and backport it to all Android kernels. I believe this feature is merged
recently enough into the upstream kernel that it shouldn't be a problem.
Also logically, IMO it makes more sense to group the TGID with the
TASK-PID and the CPU after these.

http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/make.git/commit/?id=c6966b323811c37acedff05b57

Due to this change, when attempting to run `make prepare' I get a
spurious make syntax error:

    /home/earnest/linux/tools/objtool/.fixdep.o.cmd:1: *** missing separator.  Stop.

When inspecting `.fixdep.o.cmd' it includes two lines which use
unescaped comment characters at the top:

    \# cannot find fixdep (/home/earnest/linux/tools/objtool//fixdep)

Steven Rostedt (VMware) [Tue, 10 Jul 2018 07:22:40 +0000 (08:22 +0100)]
ARM: 8780/1: ftrace: Only set kernel memory back to read-only after boot

Dynamic ftrace requires modifying the code segments that are usually
set to read-only. To do this, a per arch function is called both before
and after the ftrace modifications are performed. The "before" function
will set kernel code text to read-write to allow for ftrace to make the
modifications, and the "after" function will set the kernel code text
back to "read-only" to keep the kernel code text protected.

The issue happens when dynamic ftrace is tested at boot up. The test is
done before the kernel code text has been set to read-only. But the
"before" and "after" calls are still performed. The "after" call will
change the kernel code text to read-only prematurely, and other boot
code that expects this code to be read-write will fail.

The solution is to add a variable that is set when the kernel code text
is expected to be converted to read-only, and make the ftrace "before"
and "after" calls do nothing if that variable is not yet set. This is
similar to the x86 solution from commit 162396309745 ("ftrace, x86:
make kernel text writable only for conversions").

arm64: neon: Fix function may_use_simd() return error status

It does not matter if the caller of may_use_simd() migrates to
another cpu after the call, but it is still important that the
kernel_neon_busy percpu instance that is read matches the cpu the
task is running on at the time of the read.

This means that raw_cpu_read() is not sufficient.  kernel_neon_busy
may appear true if the caller migrates during the execution of
raw_cpu_read() and the next task to be scheduled in on the initial
cpu calls kernel_neon_begin().

This patch replaces raw_cpu_read() with this_cpu_read() to protect
against this race.

perf tools: Use python-config --includes rather than --cflags

In Fedora, Python 3.7 added -flto to the list of --cflags and since it

appears to have fixed a similar problem. "python-config --includes"

perf script python: Fix dict reference counting

The dictionaries are attached to the parameter tuple that steals the
references and takes care of releasing them when appropriate.  The code
should not decrement the reference counts explicitly.  E.g. if libpython
has been built with reference debugging enabled, the superfluous DECREFs
will trigger this error when running perf script:

Fatal Python error: Objects/tupleobject.c:238 object at
0x7f10f2041b40 has negative ref count -1
  Aborted (core dumped)

If the reference debugging is not enabled, the superfluous DECREFs might
cause the dict objects to be silently released while they are still in
use. This may trigger various other assertions or just cause perf
crashes and/or weird and unexpected data changes in the stored Python
objects.

Using tools/lib/ function scnprintf that touches the return value from
