writeback, cgroup: switch inodes with dirty timestamps to release dying cgwbs
[ Upstream commit
6654408a33e6297d8e1d2773409431d487399b95 ]
The cgwb cleanup routine will try to release the dying cgwb by switching
the attached inodes. It fetches the attached inodes from wb->b_attached
list, omitting the fact that inodes only with dirty timestamps reside in
wb->b_dirty_time list, which is the case when lazytime is enabled. This
causes enormous zombie memory cgroup when lazytime is enabled, as inodes
with dirty timestamps can not be switched to a live cgwb for a long time.
It is reasonable not to switch cgwb for inodes with dirty data, as
otherwise it may break the bandwidth restrictions. However since the
writeback of inode metadata is not accounted for, let's also switch
inodes with dirty timestamps to avoid zombie memory and block cgroups
when laztytime is enabled.

sched: Fix stop_one_cpu_nowait() vs hotplug
[ Upstream commit
f0498d2a54e7966ce23cd7c7ff42c64fa0059b07 ]
Kuyo reported sporadic failures on a sched_setaffinity() vs CPU
hotplug stress-test -- notably affine_move_task() remains stuck in
wait_for_completion(), leading to a hung-task detector warning.
Specifically, it was reported that stop_one_cpu_nowait(.fn =
migration_cpu_stop) returns false -- this stopper is responsible for
the matching complete().
The race scenario is:
CPU0 CPU1
// doing _cpu_down()
__set_cpus_allowed_ptr()
task_rq_lock();
takedown_cpu()
stop_machine_cpuslocked(take_cpu_down..)
<PREEMPT: cpu_stopper_thread()
MULTI_STOP_PREPARE
...
__set_cpus_allowed_ptr_locked()
affine_move_task()
task_rq_unlock();
<PREEMPT: cpu_stopper_thread()\>
ack_state()
MULTI_STOP_RUN
take_cpu_down()
__cpu_disable();
stop_machine_park();
stopper->enabled = false;
/>
/>
stop_one_cpu_nowait(.fn = migration_cpu_stop);
if (stopper->enabled) // false!!!
That is, by doing stop_one_cpu_nowait() after dropping rq-lock, the
stopper thread gets a chance to preempt and allows the cpu-down for
the target CPU to complete.
OTOH, since stop_one_cpu_nowait() / cpu_stop_queue_work() needs to
issue a wakeup, it must not be ran under the scheduler locks.
Solve this apparent contradiction by keeping preemption disabled over
the unlock + queue_stopper combination:
preempt_disable();
task_rq_unlock(...);
if (!stop_pending)
stop_one_cpu_nowait(...)
preempt_enable();
This respects the lock ordering contraints while still avoiding the
above race. That is, if we find the CPU is online under rq-lock, the
targeted stop_one_cpu_nowait() must succeed.
Apply this pattern to all similar stop_one_cpu_nowait() invocations.

When uclamp_max is being used, the util of the task could be higher than
the spare capacity of the CPU, but due to uclamp_max value we force-fit
it there.
The way the condition for checking for max_spare_cap in
find_energy_efficient_cpu() was constructed; it ignored any CPU that has
its spare_cap less than or _equal_ to max_spare_cap. Since we initialize
max_spare_cap to 0; this lead to never setting max_spare_cap_cpu and
hence ending up never performing compute_energy() for this cluster and
missing an opportunity for a better energy efficient placement to honour
uclamp_max setting.
max_spare_cap = 0;
cpu_cap = capacity_of(cpu) - cpu_util(p); // 0 if cpu_util(p) is high
...
util_fits_cpu(...); // will return true if uclamp_max forces it to fit
...
// this logic will fail to update max_spare_cap_cpu if cpu_cap is 0
if (cpu_cap > max_spare_cap) {
max_spare_cap = cpu_cap;
max_spare_cap_cpu = cpu;
}
prev_spare_cap suffers from a similar problem.
Fix the logic by converting the variables into long and treating -1
value as 'not populated' instead of 0 which is a viable and correct
spare capacity value. We need to be careful signed comparison is used
when comparing with cpu_cap in one of the conditions.

commit
e4876dacaca46a1b09f9b417480924ab12019a5b upstream.
Some of the later revisions of the Brainboxes PX cards are based
on the Oxford Semiconductor chipset. Due to the chip's unique setup
these cards need to be initialised.
Previously these were tested against a reference card with the same broken
baudrate on another PC, cancelling out the effect. With this patch they
work and can transfer/receive find against an FTDI-based device.
Add all of the cards which require this setup to the quirks table.
Thanks to Maciej W. Rozycki for clarification on this chip.

commit
3a75b205de43365f80a33b98ec9289785da56243 upstream.
gsm_cleanup_mux() cleans up the gsm by closing all DLCIs, stopping all
timers, removing the virtual tty devices and clearing the data queues.
This procedure, however, may cause subsequent changes of the virtual modem
status lines of a DLCI. More data is being added the outgoing data queue
and the deleted kick timer is restarted to handle this. At this point many
resources have already been removed by the cleanup procedure. Thus, a
kernel panic occurs.
Fix this by proving in gsm_modem_update() that the cleanup procedure has
not been started and the mux is still alive.
Note that writing to a virtual tty is already protected by checks against
the DLCI specific connection state.

usb: raw-gadget: properly handle interrupted requests
commit
e8033bde451eddfb9b1bbd6e2d848c1b5c277222 upstream.
Currently, if a USB request that was queued by Raw Gadget is interrupted
(via a signal), wait_for_completion_interruptible returns -ERESTARTSYS.
Raw Gadget then attempts to propagate this value to userspace as a return
value from its ioctls. However, when -ERESTARTSYS is returned by a syscall
handler, the kernel internally restarts the syscall.
This doesn't allow userspace applications to interrupt requests queued by
Raw Gadget (which is required when the emulated device is asked to switch
altsettings). It also violates the implied interface of Raw Gadget that a
single ioctl must only queue a single USB request.
Instead, make Raw Gadget do what GadgetFS does: check whether the request
was interrupted (dequeued with status == -ECONNRESET) and report -EINTR to
userspace.

Looking at how dentry is removed via the tracefs system, I found that
eventfs does not do everything that it did under tracefs. The tracefs
removal of a dentry calls simple_recursive_removal() that does a lot more
than a simple d_invalidate().
As it should be a requirement that any eventfs_inode that has a dentry, so
does its parent. When removing a eventfs_inode, if it has a dentry, a call
to simple_recursive_removal() on that dentry should clean up all the
dentries underneath it.
Add WARN_ON_ONCE() to check for the parent having a dentry if any children

eventfs: Delete eventfs_inode when the last dentry is freed
commit
020010fbfa202aa528a52743eba4ab0da3400a4e upstream
There exists a race between holding a reference of an eventfs_inode dentry
and the freeing of the eventfs_inode. If user space has a dentry held long
enough, it may still be able to access the dentry's eventfs_inode after it
has been freed.
To prevent this, have he eventfs_inode freed via the last dput() (or via
RCU if the eventfs_inode does not have a dentry).
This means reintroducing the eventfs_inode del_list field at a temporary
place to put the eventfs_inode. It needs to mark it as freed (via the
list) but also must invalidate the dentry immediately as the return from
eventfs_remove_dir() expects that they are. But the dentry invalidation
must not be called under the eventfs_mutex, so it must be done after the
eventfs_inode is marked as free (put on a deletion list).

eventfs: Save ownership and mode
commit
28e12c09f5aa081b2d13d1340e3610070b6c624d upstream
Now that inodes and dentries are created on the fly, they are also
reclaimed on memory pressure. Since the ownership and file mode are saved
in the inode, if they are freed, any changes to the ownership and mode
will be lost.
To counter this, if the user changes the permissions or ownership, save
them, and when creating the inodes again, restore those changes.

eventfs: Remove "is_freed" union with rcu head
commit
f2f496370afcbc5227d7002da28c74b91fed12ff upstream
The eventfs_inode->is_freed was a union with the rcu_head with the
assumption that when it was on the srcu list the head would contain a
pointer which would make "is_freed" true. But that was a wrong assumption
as the rcu head is a single link list where the last element is NULL.
Instead, split the nr_entries integer so that "is_freed" is one bit and
the nr_entries is the next 31 bits. As there shouldn't be more than 10
(currently there's at most 5 to 7 depending on the config), this should
not be a problem.

# cd /sys/kernel/tracing
# echo 'p:sched schedule' > kprobe_events
# exec 5>>events/kprobes/sched/enable
# > kprobe_events
# exec 5>&-
The above commands:
1. Change directory to the tracefs directory
2. Create a kprobe event (doesn't matter what one)
3. Open bash file descriptor 5 on the enable file of the kprobe event
4. Delete the kprobe event (removes the files too)
5. Close the bash file descriptor 5
The above causes a crash!

RIP: 0010:tracing_release_file_tr+0xc/0x50
What happens here is that the kprobe event creates a trace_event_file
"file" descriptor that represents the file in tracefs to the event. It
maintains state of the event (is it enabled for the given instance?).
Opening the "enable" file gets a reference to the event "file" descriptor
via the open file descriptor. When the kprobe event is deleted, the file is
also deleted from the tracefs system which also frees the event "file"
descriptor.
But as the tracefs file is still opened by user space, it will not be
totally removed until the final dput() is called on it. But this is not
true with the event "file" descriptor that is already freed. If the user
does a write to or simply closes the file descriptor it will reference the
event "file" descriptor that was just freed, causing a use-after-free bug.
To solve this, add a ref count to the event "file" descriptor as well as a
new flag called "FREED". The "file" will not be freed until the last
reference is released. But the FREE flag will be set when the event is
removed to prevent any more modifications to that event from happening,
even if there's still a reference to the event "file" descriptor.

perf evlist: Avoid frequency mode for the dummy event
[ Upstream commit
f9cdeb58a9cf46c09b56f5f661ea8da24b6458c3 ]
Dummy events are created with an attribute where the period and freq
are zero. evsel__config will then see the uninitialized values and
initialize them in evsel__default_freq_period. As fequency mode is
used by default the dummy event would be set to use frequency
mode. However, this has no effect on the dummy event but does cause
unnecessary timers/interrupts. Avoid this overhead by setting the
period to 1 for dummy events.
evlist__add_aux_dummy calls evlist__add_dummy then sets freq=0 and
period=1. This isn't necessary after this change and so the setting is
removed.
From Stephane:
The dummy event is not counting anything. It is used to collect mmap
records and avoid a race condition during the synthesize mmap phase of
perf record. As such, it should not cause any overhead during active
profiling. Yet, it did. Because of a bug the dummy event was
programmed as a sampling event in frequency mode. Events in that mode
incur more kernel overheads because on timer tick, the kernel has to
look at the number of samples for each event and potentially adjust
the sampling period to achieve the desired frequency. The dummy event
was therefore adding a frequency event to task and ctx contexts we may
otherwise not have any, e.g.,
perf record -a -e cpu/event=0x3c,period=
10000000/.
On each timer tick the perf_adjust_freq_unthr_context() is invoked and
if ctx->nr_freq is non-zero, then the kernel will loop over ALL the
events of the context looking for frequency mode ones. In doing, so it
locks the context, and enable/disable the PMU of each hw event. If all
the events of the context are in period mode, the kernel will have to
traverse the list for nothing incurring overhead. The overhead is
multiplied by a very large factor when this happens in a guest kernel.
There is no need for the dummy event to be in frequency mode, it does
not count anything and therefore should not cause extra overhead for
no reason.

sysvec_apic_timer_interrupt+0x6e/0x90
The reason is the recent conversion of the TSC synchronization function
during CPU hotplug on the control CPU to a SMP function call. In case
that the synchronization with the upcoming CPU fails, the TSC has to be
marked unstable via clocksource_mark_unstable().
clocksource_mark_unstable() acquires 'watchdog_lock', but that lock is
taken with interrupts enabled in the watchdog timer callback to minimize
interrupt disabled time. That's obviously a possible deadlock scenario,
Before that change the synchronization function was invoked in thread
context so this could not happen.
As it is not crucical whether the unstable marking happens slightly
delayed, defer the call to a worker thread which avoids the lock context
problem.

x86/i8259: Skip probing when ACPI/MADT advertises PCAT compatibility
David and a few others reported that on certain newer systems some legacy
interrupts fail to work correctly.
Debugging revealed that the BIOS of these systems leaves the legacy PIC in
uninitialized state which makes the PIC detection fail and the kernel
switches to a dummy implementation.
Unfortunately this fallback causes quite some code to fail as it depends on
checks for the number of legacy PIC interrupts or the availability of the
real PIC.
In theory there is no reason to use the PIC on any modern system when
IO/APIC is available, but the dependencies on the related checks cannot be
resolved trivially and on short notice. This needs lots of analysis and
rework.
The PIC detection has been added to avoid quirky checks and force selection
of the dummy implementation all over the place, especially in VM guest
scenarios. So it's not an option to revert the relevant commit as that
would break a lot of other scenarios.
One solution would be to try to initialize the PIC on detection fail and
retry the detection, but that puts the burden on everything which does not
have a PIC.
Fortunately the ACPI/MADT table header has a flag field, which advertises
in bit 0 that the system is PCAT compatible, which means it has a legacy
8259 PIC.
Evaluate that bit and if set avoid the detection routine and keep the real
PIC installed, which then gets initialized (for nothing) and makes the rest
of the code with all the dependencies work again.

management of disk suspend/resume. However, a side effect of this change
is that on system shutdown, disks are no longer being stopped (set to

Instead of defining a shutdown driver method for all ATA adapter
drivers (not all of them define that operation), this patch resolves
this issue by further refining the sd driver start/stop control of disks
using the new flag manage_shutdown. If this new flag is set to true by
a low level driver, the function sd_shutdown() will issue a
START STOP UNIT command with the start argument set to 0 when a disk
needs to be powered off (suspended) on system power off, that is, when
system_state is equal to SYSTEM_POWER_OFF.
Similarly to the other manage_xxx flags, the new manage_shutdown flag is
exposed through sysfs as a read-write device attribute.
To avoid any confusion between manage_shutdown and
manage_system_start_stop, the comments describing these flags in
include/scsi/scsi.h are also improved.

Netfilter fixes for net
This patch contains two late Netfilter's flowtable fixes for net:
1) Flowtable GC pushes back packets to classic path in every GC run,
ie. every second. This is because NF_FLOW_HW_ESTABLISHED is only
used by sched/act_ct (never set) and IPS_SEEN_REPLY might be unset
by the time the flow is offloaded (this status bit is only reliable
in the sched/act_ct datapath).
2) sched/act_ct logic to push back packets to classic path to reevaluate
if UDP flow is unidirectional only applies if IPS_HW_OFFLOAD_BIT is
set on and no hardware offload request is pending to be handled.
From Vlad Buslov.
These two patches fixes two problems that were introduced in the

io_uring/rw: disable IOCB_DIO_CALLER_COMP
If an application does O_DIRECT writes with io_uring and the file system
supports IOCB_DIO_CALLER_COMP, then completions of the dio write side is
done from the task_work that will post the completion event for said
write as well.
Whenever a dio write is done against a file, the inode i_dio_count is
elevated. This enables other callers to use inode_dio_wait() to wait for
previous writes to complete. If we defer the full dio completion to
task_work, we are dependent on that task_work being run before the
inode i_dio_count can be decremented.
If the same task that issues io_uring dio writes with
IOCB_DIO_CALLER_COMP performs a synchronous system call that calls
inode_dio_wait(), then we can deadlock as we're blocked sleeping on
the event to become true, but not processing the completions that will
result in the inode i_dio_count being decremented.

drm/i915/mcr: Hold GT forcewake during steering operations
The steering control and semaphore registers are inside an "always on"
power domain with respect to RC6. However there are some issues if
higher-level platform sleep states are entering/exiting at the same time

the entire lock/steer/unlock cycle ensures that those sleep states have
been fully exited before we access these registers.
This is expected to become a formally documented/numbered workaround

- Flow is already pending to be updated on the workqueue. Tearing down such
flows will also generate excessive removals from the flow table, especially
on highly loaded system where the latency to re-offload a flow via 'add'
workqueue can be quite high.
When considering a flow for teardown as outdated verify that it is both
offloaded to hardware and doesn't have any pending updates.

netfilter: flowtable: GC pushes back packets to classic path
Since
41f2c7c342d3 ("net/sched: act_ct: Fix promotion of offloaded
unreplied tuple"), flowtable GC pushes back flows with IPS_SEEN_REPLY
back to classic path in every run, ie. every second. This is because of
a new check for NF_FLOW_HW_ESTABLISHED which is specific of sched/act_ct.
In Netfilter's flowtable case, NF_FLOW_HW_ESTABLISHED never gets set on
and IPS_SEEN_REPLY is unreliable since users decide when to offload the
flow before, such bit might be set on at a later stage.
Fix it by adding a custom .gc handler that sched/act_ct can use to
deal with its NF_FLOW_HW_ESTABLISHED bit.

powerpc/mm: Avoid calling arch_enter/leave_lazy_mmu() in set_ptes
With commit
9fee28baa601 ("powerpc: implement the new page table range
API") we added set_ptes to powerpc architecture. The implementation
included calling arch_enter/leave_lazy_mmu() calls.
The patch removes the usage of arch_enter/leave_lazy_mmu() because
set_pte is not supposed to be used when updating a pte entry. Powerpc
architecture uses this rule to skip the expensive tlb invalidate which
is not needed when you are setting up the pte for the first time. See
commit
56eecdb912b5 ("mm: Use ptep/pmdp_set_numa() for updating
_PAGE_NUMA bit") for more details
The patch also makes sure we are not using the interface to update a
valid/present pte entry by adding VM_WARN_ON check all the ptes we
are setting up. Furthermore, we add a comment to set_pte_filter to
clarify it can only update folio-related flags and cannot filter
pfn specific details in pte filtering.
Removal of arch_enter/leave_lazy_mmu() also will avoid nesting of
these functions that are not supported. For ex:
remap_pte_range()
-> arch_enter_lazy_mmu()
-> set_ptes()
-> arch_enter_lazy_mmu()
-> arch_leave_lazy_mmu()
-> arch_leave_lazy_mmu()
