10 years agouprobes: Fix the memory out of bound overwrite in copy_insn()
Oleg Nesterov [Thu, 7 Nov 2013 18:41:57 +0000 (19:41 +0100)]
uprobes: Fix the memory out of bound overwrite in copy_insn()

1. copy_insn() doesn't look very nice, all calculations are
   confusing and it is not immediately clear why do we read
   the 2nd page first.

2. The usage of inode->i_size is wrong on 32-bit machines.

3. "Instruction at end of binary" logic is simply wrong, it
   doesn't handle the case when uprobe->offset > inode->i_size.

   In this case "bytes" overflows, and __copy_insn() writes to
   the memory outside of uprobe->arch.insn.

   Yes, uprobe_register() checks i_size_read(), but this file
   can be truncated after that. All i_size checks are racy, we
   do this only to catch the obvious mistakes.

Change copy_insn() to call __copy_insn() in a loop, simplify
and fix the bytes/nbytes calculations.

Note: we do not care if we read extra bytes after inode->i_size
if we got the valid page. This is fine because the task gets the
same page after page-fault, and arch_uprobe_analyze_insn() can't
know how many bytes were actually read anyway.

uprobes: Fix the wrong usage of current->utask in uprobe_copy_process()

Commit aa59c53fd459 "uprobes: Change uprobe_copy_process() to dup
xol_area" has a stupid typo, we need to setup t->utask->vaddr but
the code wrongly uses current->utask.

Even with this bug dup_xol_work() works "in practice", but only
because get_unmapped_area(NULL, TASK_SIZE - PAGE_SIZE) likely
returns the same address every time.

uprobes: Introduce arch_uprobe->ixol

Currently xol_get_insn_slot() assumes that we should simply copy
arch_uprobe->insn[] which is (ignoring arch_uprobe_analyze_insn)
just the copy of the original insn.

This is not true for arm which needs to create another insn to
execute it out-of-line.

So this patch simply adds the new member, ->ixol into the union.
This doesn't make any difference for x86 and powerpc, but arm
can divorce insn/ixol and initialize the correct xol insn in
arch_uprobe_analyze_insn().

perf: Optimize perf_output_begin()

There's no point in re-doing the memory-barrier when we fail the

clearer it only separates the userpage->tail read from the data

perf: Add unlikely() to the ring-buffer code

Add unlikely() annotations to 'slow' paths:

When having a sampling event but no output buffer; you have bigger
issues -- also the bail is still faster than actually doing the work.

When having a sampling event but a control page only buffer, you have
bigger issues -- again the bail is still faster than actually doing
work.

Optimize for the case where you're not loosing events -- again, not
doing the work is still faster but make sure that when you have to
actually do work its as fast as possible.

The typical watermark is 1/2 the buffer size, so most events will not
take this path.

        field:unsigned int len;     offset:12;      size:4; signed:0;
        field:__data_loc unsigned char[] data_array;  offset:16;      size:4; signed:0;
print fmt: "%s", __print_hex(__get_dynamic_array(data_array), REC->len)

trace-cmd could already parse that arg correctly, but print_str_arg()
was unable to handle the first parameter being a dynamic array. (It
just printed a "field not found" warning).

Teach print_str_arg's PRINT_HEX case to handle the nested
PRINT_DYNAMIC_ARRAY correctly. The output now matches the kernel's own
formatting for this case.

perf tools: Add new COMM infrastructure

This new COMM infrastructure provides two features:

1) It keeps track of all comms lifecycle for a given thread. This way we
can associate a timeframe to any thread COMM, as long as
PERF_SAMPLE_TIME samples are joined to COMM and fork events.

As a result we should have more precise COMM sorted hists with seperated
entries for pre and post exec time after a fork.

2) It also makes sure that a given COMM string is not duplicated but
rather shared among the threads that refer to it. This way the threads
COMM can be compared against pointer values from the sort
infrastructure.

Vineet Gupta [Sat, 2 Nov 2013 12:17:49 +0000 (17:47 +0530)]
ARC: Incorrect mm reference used in vmalloc fault handler

A vmalloc fault needs to sync up PGD/PTE entry from init_mm to current
task's "active_mm".  ARC vmalloc fault handler however was using mm.

A vmalloc fault for non user task context (actually pre-userland, from
init thread's open for /dev/console) caused the handler to deref NULL mm
(for mm->pgd)

The reasons it worked so far is amazing:

1. By default (!SMP), vmalloc fault handler uses a cached value of PGD.
   In SMP that MMU register is repurposed hence need for mm pointer deref.

2. In pre-3.12 SMP kernel, the problem triggering vmalloc didn't exist in
   pre-userland code path - it was introduced with commit 20bafb3d23d108bc

generally for generating code purpose and can't be run at

Greg Thelen [Fri, 1 Nov 2013 19:16:59 +0000 (12:16 -0700)]
memcg: remove incorrect underflow check

When a memcg is deleted mem_cgroup_reparent_charges() moves charged
memory to the parent memcg.  As of v3.11-9444-g3ea67d0 "memcg: add per
cgroup writeback pages accounting" there's bad pointer read.  The goal
was to check for counter underflow.  The counter is a per cpu counter
and there are two problems with the code:

 (1) per cpu access function isn't used, instead a naked pointer is used
     which easily causes oops.
 (2) the check doesn't sum all cpus

Test:
  $ cd /sys/fs/cgroup/memory
  $ mkdir x
  $ echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
  $ (echo $BASHPID >> x/tasks && exec cat) &
  [1] 7154
  $ grep ^mapped x/memory.stat
  mapped_file 53248
  $ echo 7154 > tasks
  $ rmdir x
  <OOPS>

The fix is to remove the check.  It's currently dangerous and isn't
worth fixing it to use something expensive, such as
percpu_counter_sum(), for each reparented page.  __this_cpu_read() isn't
enough to fix this because there's no guarantees of the current cpus
count.  The only guarantees is that the sum of all per-cpu counter is >=
nr_pages.

11 years agoperf test: Update command line callchain attribute tests
Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo [Thu, 31 Oct 2013 12:46:59 +0000 (09:46 -0300)]
perf test: Update command line callchain attribute tests

The "struct perf_event_attr setup" entry in 'perf test' is in fact a
series of tests that will exec the tools, passing different sets of
command line arguments to then intercept the sys_perf_event_open
syscall, in user space, to check that the perf_event_attr->sample_type
and other feature request bits are setup as expected.

We recently restored the callchain requesting command line argument, -g,
to not require a parameter ("dwarf" or "fp"), instead using a default
("fp" for now) and making the long option variant, --call-chain, be the
one to be used when a different callchain collection method is
preferred.

The "struct perf_event_attr setup" test failed because we forgot to
update the tests involving callchains, not switching from, '-g dwarf' to
'--call-chain dwarf', making 'perf test' detect it:

  [root@sandy ~]# perf test -v 13
  13: struct perf_event_attr setup                           :
  --- start ---
  running '/home/acme/libexec/perf-core/tests/attr/test-record-basic'
  running '/home/acme/libexec/perf-core/tests/attr/test-record-branch-any'
  <SNIP>
  running '/home/acme/libexec/perf-core/tests/attr/test-record-graph-default'
  running '/home/acme/libexec/perf-core/tests/attr/test-record-graph-dwarf'
  expected sample_type=12583, got 295
  expected exclude_callchain_user=1, got 0
  expected sample_stack_user=8192, got 0
  FAILED '/home/acme/libexec/perf-core/tests/attr/test-record-graph-dwarf' - match failure
  ---- end ----
  struct perf_event_attr setup: FAILED!
  [root@sandy ~]#

Fix all of them now to use --call-chain when explicitely specifying a
method.

There is still work to do, as '-g fp', for instance, passed without
problems.

In that case 'perf test' saw no problems as the intercepted syscall got
the bits as expected, i.e. the default is 'fp', but the fact that 'fp'
may be an existing program and the specified workload would then be
passed as a parameter to it is an usability problem that needs fixing.

Next merge window tho.

lib/scatterlist.c: don't flush_kernel_dcache_page on slab page

Commit b1adaf65ba03 ("[SCSI] block: add sg buffer copy helper
functions") introduces two sg buffer copy helpers, and calls
flush_kernel_dcache_page() on pages in SG list after these pages are
written to.

Unfortunately, the commit may introduce a potential bug:

 - Before sending some SCSI commands, kmalloc() buffer may be passed to
   block layper, so flush_kernel_dcache_page() can see a slab page
   finally

 - According to cachetlb.txt, flush_kernel_dcache_page() is only called
   on "a user page", which surely can't be a slab page.

 - ARCH's implementation of flush_kernel_dcache_page() may use page
   mapping information to do optimization so page_mapping() will see the
   slab page, then VM_BUG_ON() is triggered.

Aaro Koskinen reported the bug on ARM/kirkwood when DEBUG_VM is enabled,
and this patch fixes the bug by adding test of '!PageSlab(miter->page)'
before calling flush_kernel_dcache_page().
