x86/timer: Skip PIT initialization on modern chipsets
Recent Intel chipsets including Skylake and ApolloLake have a special
ITSSPRC register which allows the 8254 PIT to be gated. When gated, the
8254 registers can still be programmed as normal, but there are no IRQ0
timer interrupts.
Some products such as the Connex L1430 and exone go Rugged E11 use this
register to ship with the PIT gated by default. This causes Linux to fail
to boot:
Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! Boot with
apic=debug and send a report.
The panic happens before the framebuffer is initialized, so to the user, it
appears as an early boot hang on a black screen.
Affected products typically have a BIOS option that can be used to enable
the 8254 and make Linux work (Chipset -> South Cluster Configuration ->
Miscellaneous Configuration -> 8254 Clock Gating), however it would be best
to make Linux support the no-8254 case.
Modern sytems allow to discover the TSC and local APIC timer frequencies,
so the calibration against the PIT is not required. These systems have
always running timers and the local APIC timer works also in deep power
states.
So the setup of the PIT including the IO-APIC timer interrupt delivery
checks are a pointless exercise.
Skip the PIT setup and the IO-APIC timer interrupt checks on these systems,
which avoids the panic caused by non ticking PITs and also speeds up the
boot process.
Thanks to Daniel for providing the changelog, initial analysis of the
problem and testing against a variety of machines.

x86/tsc: Set LAPIC timer period to crystal clock frequency
The APIC timer calibration (calibrate_APIC_timer()) can be skipped
in cases where we know the APIC timer frequency. On Intel SoCs,
we believe that the APIC is fed by the crystal clock; this would make
sense, and the crystal clock frequency has been verified against the
APIC timer calibration result on ApolloLake, GeminiLake, Kabylake,
CoffeeLake, WhiskeyLake and AmberLake.
Set lapic_timer_period based on the crystal clock frequency
accordingly.
APIC timer calibration would normally be skipped on modern CPUs
by nature of the TSC deadline timer being used instead,
however this change is still potentially useful, e.g. if the
TSC deadline timer has been disabled with a kernel parameter.
calibrate_APIC_timer() uses the legacy timer, but we are seeing
new platforms that omit such legacy functionality, so avoiding
such codepaths is becoming more important.

x86/tsc: Use CPUID.0x16 to calculate missing crystal frequency
native_calibrate_tsc() had a data mapping Intel CPU families
and crystal clock speed, but hardcoded tables are not ideal, and this
approach was already problematic at least in the Skylake X case, as
seen in commit:
b51120309348 ("x86/tsc: Fix erroneous TSC rate on Skylake Xeon")
By examining CPUID data from http://instlatx64.atw.hu/ and units
in the lab, we have found that 3 different scenarios need to be dealt
with, and we can eliminate most of the hardcoded data using an approach a
little more advanced than before:
1. ApolloLake, GeminiLake, CannonLake (and presumably all new chipsets
from this point) report the crystal frequency directly via CPUID.0x15.
That's definitive data that we can rely upon.
2. Skylake, Kabylake and all variants of those two chipsets report a
crystal frequency of zero, however we can calculate the crystal clock
speed by condidering data from CPUID.0x16.
This method correctly distinguishes between the two crystal clock
frequencies present on different Skylake X variants that caused
headaches before.
As the calculations do not quite match the previously-hardcoded values
in some cases (e.g. 23913043Hz instead of 24MHz), TSC refinement is
enabled on all platforms where we had to calculate the crystal
frequency in this way.
3. Denverton (GOLDMONT_X) reports a crystal frequency of zero and does
not support CPUID.0x16, so we leave this entry hardcoded.

Merge branch 'core-stacktrace-for-linus' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull stack trace updates from Ingo Molnar:
"So Thomas looked at the stacktrace code recently and noticed a few
weirdnesses, and we all know how such stories of crummy kernel code
meeting German engineering perfection end: a 45-patch series to clean
it all up! :-)
Here's the changes in Thomas's words:
'Struct stack_trace is a sinkhole for input and output parameters
which is largely pointless for most usage sites. In fact if embedded
into other data structures it creates indirections and extra storage
overhead for no benefit.
Looking at all usage sites makes it clear that they just require an
interface which is based on a storage array. That array is either on
stack, global or embedded into some other data structure.
Some of the stack depot usage sites are outright wrong, but
fortunately the wrongness just causes more stack being used for
nothing and does not have functional impact.
Another oddity is the inconsistent termination of the stack trace
with ULONG_MAX. It's pointless as the number of entries is what
determines the length of the stored trace. In fact quite some call
sites remove the ULONG_MAX marker afterwards with or without nasty
comments about it. Not all architectures do that and those which do,
do it inconsistenly either conditional on nr_entries == 0 or
unconditionally.
The following series cleans that up by:
1) Removing the ULONG_MAX termination in the architecture code
2) Removing the ULONG_MAX fixups at the call sites
3) Providing plain storage array based interfaces for stacktrace

Merge branch 'core-objtool-for-linus' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull objtool updates from Ingo Molnar:
"This is a series from Peter Zijlstra that adds x86 build-time uaccess
validation of SMAP to objtool, which will detect and warn about the
following uaccess API usage bugs and weirdnesses:
- call to %s() with UACCESS enabled
- return with UACCESS enabled
- return with UACCESS disabled from a UACCESS-safe function
- recursive UACCESS enable
- redundant UACCESS disable
- UACCESS-safe disables UACCESS
As it turns out not leaking uaccess permissions outside the intended
uaccess functionality is hard when the interfaces are complex and when
such bugs are mostly dormant.
As a bonus we now also check the DF flag. We had at least one
high-profile bug in that area in the early days of Linux, and the
checking is fairly simple. The checks performed and warnings emitted
are:
- call to %s() with DF set
- return with DF set
- return with modified stack frame
- recursive STD
- redundant CLD
It's all x86-only for now, but later on this can also be used for PAN
on ARM and objtool is fairly cross-platform in principle.
While all warnings emitted by this new checking facility that got
reported to us were fixed, there might be GCC version dependent
warnings that were not reported yet - which we'll address, should they
trigger.
The warnings are non-fatal build warnings"

The event is configured to make samples from PEBS drain code,
but when it's disabled, we'll go through NMI path instead,
where data->callchain will not get allocated and we'll crash:

}
</NMI>
...
x86_pmu_disable_event(event)

__clear_bit(hwc->idx, cpuc->active_mask);
Fixing this by disabling the event itself before setting

nohz_full: Allow the boot CPU to be nohz_full
Allow the boot CPU/CPU0 to be nohz_full. Have the boot CPU take the
do_timer duty during boot until a housekeeping CPU can take over.
This is supported when CONFIG_PM_SLEEP_SMP is not configured, or when
it is configured and the arch allows suspend on non-zero CPUs.
nohz_full has been trialed at a large supercomputer site and found to
significantly reduce jitter. In order to deploy it in production, they
need CPU0 to be nohz_full because their job control system requires
the application CPUs to start from 0, and the housekeeping CPUs are
placed higher. An equivalent job scheduling that uses CPU0 for
housekeeping could be achieved by modifying their system, but it is
preferable if nohz_full can support their environment without
modification.

This patch provides an arch option, ARCH_SUSPEND_NONZERO_CPU, to
opt-in to allowing suspend to occur on one of the housekeeping CPUs

This will allow CPU0 to be a nohz_full CPU with a later change.
It may be possible for platforms with hardware/firmware restrictions
on suspend/wake effectively support this by handing off the final

option is to make housekeeping / nohz_full mask dynamic at runtime,

perf cs-etm: Always allocate memory for cs_etm_queue::prev_packet
Robert Walker reported a segmentation fault is observed when process
CoreSight trace data; this issue can be easily reproduced by the command
'perf report --itrace=i1000i' for decoding tracing data.
If neither the 'b' flag (synthesize branches events) nor 'l' flag
(synthesize last branch entries) are specified to option '--itrace',
cs_etm_queue::prev_packet will not been initialised. After merging the
code to support exception packets and sample flags, there introduced a
number of uses of cs_etm_queue::prev_packet without checking whether it
is valid, for these cases any accessing to uninitialised prev_packet
will cause crash.
As cs_etm_queue::prev_packet is used more widely now and it's already
hard to follow which functions have been called in a context where the
validity of cs_etm_queue::prev_packet has been checked, this patch
always allocates memory for cs_etm_queue::prev_packet.

The sample precentage is a bit low.....
The GUI always fails in the FINISHED_ROUND event (68) and does not
indicate the reason why.
When happened is the following. Perf report calls a lot of functions and
down deep when a FINISHED_ROUND event is processed, these functions are
called:
perf_session__process_event()
+ perf_session__process_user_event()
+ process_finished_round()
+ ordered_events__flush()
+ __ordered_events__flush()
+ do_flush()
+ ordered_events__deliver_event()
+ perf_session__deliver_event()
+ machine__deliver_event()
+ perf_evlist__deliver_event()
+ process_sample_event()
+ hist_entry_iter_add() --> only called in GUI case!!!
+ hist_iter__report__callback()
+ symbol__inc_addr_sample()
Now this functions runs out of memory and
returns -ENOMEM. This is reported all the way up
until function
perf_session__process_event() returns to its caller, where -ENOMEM is
changed to -EINVAL and processing stops:
if ((skip = perf_session__process_event(session, event, head)) < 0) {
pr_err("%#" PRIx64 " [%#x]: failed to process type: %d\n",
head, event->header.size, event->header.type);
err = -EINVAL;
goto out_err;
}
This occurred in the FINISHED_ROUND event when it has to process some
10000 entries and ran out of memory.
This patch indicates the root cause and displays it in the status line
of ther perf report GUI.
Output before (on GUI status line):
0xf4198 [0x8]: failed to process type: 68
Output after:
0xf4198 [0x8]: failed to process type: 68 [not enough memory]

So, since RUSAGE_THREAD is available as a define, check for that and

So, since RUSAGE_THREAD is available as a define in the system headers,
check if it is defined in the 'perf bench numa' sources and define it if
not.
Now it builds and I have to figure out if the problem reported by Vineet
only takes place if we have libelf or some other library available.

perf test -v 6
it outputs error log on the ARM64 platform:

trace-cmd: Invalid argument
The trace event parsing code originally came from trace-cmd so it keeps
the tag string "trace-cmd" for errors, this easily introduces the
impression that the perf tool launches trace-cmd command for trace event
parsing, but in fact the related parsing is accomplished by the
traceevent lib.
This patch changes the tag string to "libtraceevent" so that we can
avoid confusion and let users to more easily connect the error with

i2c: Prevent runtime suspend of adapter when Host Notify is required
Multiple users have reported their Synaptics touchpad has stopped
working between v4.20.1 and v4.20.2 when using SMBus interface.
The culprit for this appeared to be commit
c5eb1190074c ("PCI / PM: Allow
runtime PM without callback functions") that fixed the runtime PM for
i2c-i801 SMBus adapter. Those Synaptics touchpad are using i2c-i801
for SMBus communication and testing showed they are able to get back
working by preventing the runtime suspend of adapter.
Normally when i2c-i801 SMBus adapter transmits with the client it resumes
before operation and autosuspends after.
However, if client requires SMBus Host Notify protocol, what those
Synaptics touchpads do, then the host adapter must not go to runtime
suspend since then it cannot process incoming SMBus Host Notify commands
the client may send.
Fix this by keeping I2C/SMBus adapter active in case client requires
Host Notify.
