drivers/genpd and starts moving some of the corresponding code in
there.
We have currently ~60 users of the genpd provider interface, which are
sprinkled across various subsystems. To release some burden from the
soc maintainers (Arnd Bergmann, etc) in particular, but also to gain a
better overall view of what goes on in the area, I will help out with
maintenance"

end up moving this driver subsystem somewhere else, but that's still

x86: bring back rep movsq for user access on CPUs without ERMS
Intel CPUs ship with ERMS for over a decade, but this is not true for
AMD. In particular one reasonably recent uarch (EPYC 7R13) does not
have it (or at least the bit is inactive when running on the Amazon EC2
cloud -- I found rather conflicting information about AMD CPUs vs the
extension).
Hand-rolled mov loops executing in this case are quite pessimal compared
to rep movsq for bigger sizes. While the upper limit depends on uarch,
everyone is well south of 1KB AFAICS and sizes bigger than that are
common.
While technically ancient CPUs may be suffering from rep usage, gcc has
been emitting it for years all over kernel code, so I don't think this
is a legitimate concern.
Sample result from read1_processes from will-it-scale (4KB reads/s):
before: 1507021
after: 1721828 (+14%)
Note that the cutoff point for rep usage is set to 64 bytes, which is
way too conservative but I'm sticking to what was done in
47ee3f1dd93b
("x86: re-introduce support for ERMS copies for user space accesses").
That is to say *some* copies will now go slower, which is fixable but
beyond the scope of this patch.

Merge tag 'lsm-pr-
20230829' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/pcmoore/lsm
Pull LSM updates from Paul Moore:
- Add proper multi-LSM support for xattrs in the
security_inode_init_security() hook
Historically the LSM layer has only allowed a single LSM to add an
xattr to an inode, with IMA/EVM measuring that and adding its own as
well. As we work towards promoting IMA/EVM to a "proper LSM" instead
of the special case that it is now, we need to better support the
case of multiple LSMs each adding xattrs to an inode and after
several attempts we now appear to have something that is working
well. It is worth noting that in the process of making this change we
uncovered a problem with Smack's SMACK64TRANSMUTE xattr which is also
fixed in this pull request.
- Additional LSM hook constification
Two patches to constify parameters to security_capget() and
security_binder_transfer_file(). While I generally don't make a
special note of who submitted these patches, these were the work of
an Outreachy intern, Khadija Kamran, and that makes me happy;
hopefully it does the same for all of you reading this.
- LSM hook comment header fixes
One patch to add a missing hook comment header, one to fix a minor
typo.
- Remove an old, unused credential function declaration
It wasn't clear to me who should pick this up, but it was trivial,
obviously correct, and arguably the LSM layer has a vested interest
in credentials so I merged it. Sadly I'm now noticing that despite my
subject line cleanup I didn't cleanup the "unsued" misspelling, sigh

Merge tag 'selinux-pr-
20230829' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/pcmoore/selinux
Pull selinux updates from Paul Moore:
"Thirty three SELinux patches, which is a pretty big number for us, but
there isn't really anything scary in here; in fact we actually manage
to remove 10 lines of code with this :)
- Promote the SELinux DEBUG_HASHES macro to CONFIG_SECURITY_SELINUX_DEBUG
The DEBUG_HASHES macro was a buried SELinux specific preprocessor
debug macro that was a problem waiting to happen. Promoting the
debug macro to a proper Kconfig setting should help both improve
the visibility of the feature as well enable improved test
coverage. We've moved some additional debug functions under the
CONFIG_SECURITY_SELINUX_DEBUG flag and we may see more work in the
future.
- Emit a pr_notice() message if virtual memory is executable by default
As this impacts the SELinux access control policy enforcement, if
the system's configuration is such that virtual memory is
executable by default we print a single line notice to the console.
- Drop avtab_search() in favor of avtab_search_node()
Both functions are nearly identical so we removed avtab_search()
and converted the callers to avtab_search_node().
- Add some SELinux network auditing helpers
The helpers not only reduce a small amount of code duplication, but
they provide an opportunity to improve UDP flood performance
slightly by delaying initialization of the audit data in some
cases.
- Convert GFP_ATOMIC allocators to GFP_KERNEL when reading SELinux policy
There were two SELinux policy load helper functions that were
allocating memory using GFP_ATOMIC, they have been converted to
GFP_KERNEL.
- Quiet a KMSAN warning in selinux_inet_conn_request()
A one-line error path (re)set patch that resolves a KMSAN warning.
It is important to note that this doesn't represent a real bug in
the current code, but it quiets KMSAN and arguably hardens the code
against future changes.
- Cleanup the policy capability accessor functions
This is a follow-up to the patch which reverted SELinux to using a
global selinux_state pointer. This patch cleans up some artifacts
of that change and turns each accessor into a one-line READ_ONCE()
call into the policy capabilities array.
- A number of patches from Christian Göttsche
Christian submitted almost two-thirds of the patches in this pull
request as he worked to harden the SELinux code against type
differences, variable overflows, etc.
- Support for separating early userspace from the kernel in policy,
with a later revert
We did have a patch that added a new userspace initial SID which
would allow SELinux to distinguish between early user processes
created before the initial policy load and the kernel itself.
Unfortunately additional post-merge testing revealed a problematic
interaction with an old SELinux userspace on an old version of
Ubuntu so we've reverted the patch until we can resolve the
compatibility issue.
- Remove some outdated comments dealing with LSM hook registration
When we removed the runtime disable functionality we forgot to
remove some old comments discussing the importance of LSM hook
registration ordering.
- Minor administrative changes
Stephen Smalley updated his email address and "debranded" SELinux
from "NSA SELinux" to simply "SELinux". We've come a long way from
the original NSA submission and I would consider SELinux a true
community project at this point so removing the NSA branding just
makes sense"

Pull audit updates from Paul Moore:
"Six audit patches, the highlights are:
- Add an explicit cond_resched() call when generating PATH records
Certain tracefs/debugfs operations can generate a *lot* of audit
PATH entries and if one has an aggressive system configuration (not
the default) this can cause a soft lockup in the audit code as it
works to process all of these new entries.
This is in sharp contrast to the common case where only one or two
PATH entries are logged. In order to fix this corner case without
excessively impacting the common case we're adding a single
cond_rescued() call between two of the most intensive loops in the
__audit_inode_child() function.
- Various minor cleanups
We removed a conditional header file as the included header already
had the necessary logic in place, fixed a dummy function's return
value, and the usual collection of checkpatch.pl noise (whitespace,
brace, and trailing statement tweaks)"

Merge tag 'sysctl-6.6-rc1' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/linux
Pull sysctl updates from Luis Chamberlain:
"Long ago we set out to remove the kitchen sink on kernel/sysctl.c
arrays and placings sysctls to their own sybsystem or file to help
avoid merge conflicts. Matthew Wilcox pointed out though that if we're
going to do that we might as well also *save* space while at it and
try to remove the extra last sysctl entry added at the end of each
array, a sentintel, instead of bloating the kernel by adding a new
sentinel with each array moved.
Doing that was not so trivial, and has required slowing down the moves
of kernel/sysctl.c arrays and measuring the impact on size by each new
move.
The complex part of the effort to help reduce the size of each sysctl
is being done by the patient work of el señor Don Joel Granados. A lot
of this is truly painful code refactoring and testing and then trying
to measure the savings of each move and removing the sentinels.
Although Joel already has code which does most of this work,
experience with sysctl moves in the past shows is we need to be
careful due to the slew of odd build failures that are possible due to
the amount of random Kconfig options sysctls use.
To that end Joel's work is split by first addressing the major
housekeeping needed to remove the sentinels, which is part of this
merge request. The rest of the work to actually remove the sentinels
will be done later in future kernel releases.
The preliminary math is showing this will all help reduce the overall
build time size of the kernel and run time memory consumed by the
kernel by about ~64 bytes per array where we are able to remove each
sentinel in the future. That also means there is no more bloating the
kernel with the extra ~64 bytes per array moved as no new sentinels
are created"

Merge tag 'modules-6.6-rc1' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/linux
Pull modules updates from Luis Chamberlain:
"Summary of the changes worth highlighting from most interesting to
boring below:
- Christoph Hellwig's symbol_get() fix to Nvidia's efforts to
circumvent the protection he put in place in year 2020 to prevent
proprietary modules from using GPL only symbols, and also ensuring
proprietary modules which export symbols grandfather their taint.
That was done through year 2020 commit
262e6ae7081d ("modules:
inherit TAINT_PROPRIETARY_MODULE"). Christoph's new fix is done by
clarifing __symbol_get() was only ever intended to prevent module
reference loops by Linux kernel modules and so making it only find
symbols exported via EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL(). The circumvention tactic
used by Nvidia was to use symbol_get() to purposely swift through
proprietary module symbols and completely bypass our traditional
EXPORT_SYMBOL*() annotations and community agreed upon
restrictions.
A small set of preamble patches fix up a few symbols which just
needed adjusting for this on two modules, the rtc ds1685 and the
networking enetc module. Two other modules just needed some build
fixing and removal of use of __symbol_get() as they can't ever be
modular, as was done by Arnd on the ARM pxa module and Christoph
did on the mmc au1xmmc driver.
This is a good reminder to us that symbol_get() is just a hack to
address things which should be fixed through Kconfig at build time
as was done in the later patches, and so ultimately it should just
go.
- Extremely late minor fix for old module layout
055f23b74b20
("module: check for exit sections in layout_sections() instead of
module_init_section()") by James Morse for arm64. Note that this
layout thing is old, it is *not* Song Liu's commit
ac3b43283923
("module: replace module_layout with module_memory"). The issue
however is very odd to run into and so there was no hurry to get
this in fast.
- Although the fix did not go through the modules tree I'd like to
highlight the fix by Peter Zijlstra in commit
54097309620e
("x86/static_call: Fix __static_call_fixup()") now merged in your
tree which came out of what was originally suspected to be a
fallout of the the newer module layout changes by Song Liu commit
ac3b43283923 ("module: replace module_layout with module_memory")
instead of module_init_section()"). Thanks to the report by
Christian Bricart and the debugging by Song Liu & Peter that turned
to be noted as a kernel regression in place since v5.19 through
commit
ee88d363d156 ("x86,static_call: Use alternative RET
encoding").
I highlight this to reflect and clarify that we haven't seen more
fallout from
ac3b43283923 ("module: replace module_layout with
module_memory").
- RISC-V toolchain got mapping symbol support which prefix symbols
with "$" to help with alignment considerations for disassembly.
This is used to differentiate between incompatible instruction
encodings when disassembling. RISC-V just matches what ARM/AARCH64
did for alignment considerations and Palmer Dabbelt extended
is_mapping_symbol() to accept these symbols for RISC-V. We already
had support for this for all architectures but it also checked for
the second character, the RISC-V check Dabbelt added was just for
the "$". After a bit of testing and fallout on linux-next and based
on feedback from Masahiro Yamada it was decided to simplify the
check and treat the first char "$" as unique for all architectures,
and so we no make is_mapping_symbol() for all archs if the symbol
starts with "$".
The most relevant commit for this for RISC-V on binutils was:
https://sourceware.org/pipermail/binutils/2021-July/117350.html
- A late fix by Andrea Righi (today) to make module zstd
decompression use vmalloc() instead of kmalloc() to account for
large compressed modules. I suspect we'll see similar things for
other decompression algorithms soon.
- samples/hw_breakpoint minor fixes by Rong Tao, Arnd Bergmann and

Pull slab updates from Vlastimil Babka:
"This happens to be a small one (due to summer I guess), and all
hardening related:
- Randomized kmalloc caches, by GONG, Ruiqi.
A new opt-in hardening feature to make heap spraying harder. It
creates multiple (16) copies of kmalloc caches, reducing the chance
of an attacker-controllable allocation site to land in the same
slab as e.g. an allocation site with use-after-free vulnerability.
The selection of the copy is derived from the allocation site
address, including a per-boot random seed.
- Stronger typing for hardened freelists in SLUB, by Jann Horn
Introduces a custom type for hardened freelist entries instead of
"void *" as those are not directly dereferencable. While reviewing
this, I've noticed opportunities for further cleanups in that code
and added those on top"

- Move a misplaced lockep assertion before we potentially free the

- Ensure that filesystems which match superblocks in sget{_fc}()

as long as a superblock still appears on the filesystem type's

What we want as a proper solution for next cycle is to split
sb->free_sb() out of sb->kill_sb() so that we can simply call
kill_super_notify() after sb->kill_sb() but before sb->free_sb().
Currently, this is lumped together in sb->kill_sb()"

Merge tag 'rust-6.6' of https://github.com/Rust-for-Linux/linux
Pull rust updates from Miguel Ojeda:
"In terms of lines, most changes this time are on the pinned-init API
and infrastructure. While we have a Rust version upgrade, and thus a
bunch of changes from the vendored 'alloc' crate as usual, this time
those do not account for many lines.
Toolchain and infrastructure:
- Upgrade to Rust 1.71.1. This is the second such upgrade, which is a
smaller jump compared to the last time.
This version allows us to remove the '__rust_*' allocator functions
-- the compiler now generates them as expected, thus now our
'KernelAllocator' is used.
It also introduces the 'offset_of!' macro in the standard library
(as an unstable feature) which we will need soon. So far, we were
using a declarative macro as a prerequisite in some not-yet-landed
patch series, which did not support sub-fields (i.e. nested
structs):
#[repr(C)]
struct S {
a: u16,
b: (u8, u8),
}
assert_eq!(offset_of!(S, b.1), 3);
- Upgrade to bindgen 0.65.1. This is the first time we upgrade its
version.
Given it is a fairly big jump, it comes with a fair number of
improvements/changes that affect us, such as a fix needed to
support LLVM 16 as well as proper support for '__noreturn' C
functions, which are now mapped to return the '!' type in Rust:
void __noreturn f(void); // C
pub fn f() -> !; // Rust
- 'scripts/rust_is_available.sh' improvements and fixes.
This series takes care of all the issues known so far and adds a
few new checks to cover for even more cases, plus adds some more
help texts. All this together will hopefully make problematic
setups easier to identify and to be solved by users building the
kernel.
In addition, it adds a test suite which covers all branches of the
shell script, as well as tests for the issues found so far.
- Support rust-analyzer for out-of-tree modules too.
- Give 'cfg's to rust-analyzer for the 'core' and 'alloc' crates.
- Drop 'scripts/is_rust_module.sh' since it is not needed anymore.
Macros crate:
- New 'paste!' proc macro.
This macro is a more flexible version of 'concat_idents!': it
allows the resulting identifier to be used to declare new items and
it allows to transform the identifiers before concatenating them,
e.g.
let x_1 = 42;
paste!(let [<x _2>] = [<x _1>];);
assert!(x_1 == x_2);
The macro is then used for several of the pinned-init API changes
in this pull.
Pinned-init API:
- Make '#[pin_data]' compatible with conditional compilation of
fields, allowing to write code like:
#[pin_data]
pub struct Foo {
#[cfg(CONFIG_BAR)]
a: Bar,
#[cfg(not(CONFIG_BAR))]
a: Baz,
}
- New '#[derive(Zeroable)]' proc macro for the 'Zeroable' trait,
which allows 'unsafe' implementations for structs where every field
implements the 'Zeroable' trait, e.g.:
#[derive(Zeroable)]
pub struct DriverData {
id: i64,
buf_ptr: *mut u8,
len: usize,
}
- Add '..Zeroable::zeroed()' syntax to the 'pin_init!' macro for
zeroing all other fields, e.g.:
pin_init!(Buf {
buf: [1; 64],
..Zeroable::zeroed()
});
- New '{,pin_}init_array_from_fn()' functions to create array
initializers given a generator function, e.g.:
let b: Box<[usize; 1_000]> = Box::init::<Error>(
init_array_from_fn(|i| i)
).unwrap();
assert_eq!(b.len(), 1_000);
assert_eq!(b[123], 123);
- New '{,pin_}chain' methods for '{,Pin}Init<T, E>' that allow to
execute a closure on the value directly after initialization, e.g.:
let foo = init!(Foo {
buf <- init::zeroed()
}).chain(|foo| {
foo.setup();
Ok(())
});
- Support arbitrary paths in init macros, instead of just identifiers
and generic types.
- Implement the 'Zeroable' trait for the 'UnsafeCell<T>' and
'Opaque<T>' types.
- Make initializer values inaccessible after initialization.
- Make guards in the init macros hygienic.
'allocator' module:
- Use 'krealloc_aligned()' in 'KernelAllocator::alloc' preventing
misaligned allocations when the Rust 1.71.1 upgrade is applied
later in this pull.
The equivalent fix for the previous compiler version (where
'KernelAllocator' is not yet used) was merged into 6.5 already,
which added the 'krealloc_aligned()' function used here.
- Implement 'KernelAllocator::{realloc, alloc_zeroed}' for
performance, using 'krealloc_aligned()' too, which forwards the
call to the C API.
'types' module:
- Make 'Opaque' be '!Unpin', removing the need to add a
'PhantomPinned' field to Rust structs that contain C structs which
must not be moved.
- Make 'Opaque' use 'UnsafeCell' as the outer type, rather than
inner.
Documentation:
- Suggest obtaining the source code of the Rust's 'core' library
using the tarball instead of the repository.
MAINTAINERS:
- Andreas and Alice, from Samsung and Google respectively, are
joining as reviewers of the "RUST" entry.
As well as a few other minor changes and cleanups"

ALSA: pcm: Fix missing fixup call in compat hw_refine ioctl
The update of rate_num/den and msbits were factored out to
fixup_unreferenced_params() function to be called explicitly after the
hw_refine or hw_params procedure. It's called from
snd_pcm_hw_refine_user(), but it's forgotten in the PCM compat ioctl.
This ended up with the incomplete rate_num/den and msbits parameters
when 32bit compat ioctl is used.
This patch adds the missing call in snd_pcm_ioctl_hw_params_compat().

Merge branch 'slab/for-6.6/random_kmalloc' into slab/for-next
Merge the new hardening feature to make heap spraying harder, by GONG,
Ruiqi. It creates multiple (16) copies of kmalloc caches, reducing the
chance of an attacker-controllable allocation site to land in the same
slab as e.g. an allocation site with use-after-free vulnerability. The
selection of the copy is derived from the allocation site address,
including a per-boot random seed.
In line with SLAB deprecation, this is a SLUB only feature, incompatible
with SLUB_TINY due to the memory overhead of the extra cache copies.

super: ensure valid info
For keyed filesystems that recycle superblocks based on s_fs_info or
information contained therein s_fs_info must be kept as long as the
superblock is on the filesystem type super list. This isn't guaranteed
as s_fs_info will be freed latest in sb->kill_sb().
The fix is simply to perform notification and list removal in
kill_anon_super(). Any filesystem needs to free s_fs_info after they
call the kill_*() helpers. If they don't they risk use-after-free right
now so fixing it here is guaranteed that s_fs_info remain valid.
For block backed filesystems notifying in pass sb->kill_sb() in
deactivate_locked_super() remains unproblematic and is required because
multiple other block devices can be shut down after kill_block_super()
has been called from a filesystem's sb->kill_sb() handler. For example,
ext4 and xfs close additional devices. Block based filesystems don't
depend on s_fs_info (btrfs does use s_fs_info but also uses
kill_anon_super() and not kill_block_super().).
Sorry for that braino. Goal should be to unify this behavior during this
cycle obviously. But let's please do a simple bugfix now.

Merge tag 'sched-core-2023-08-28' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull scheduler updates from Ingo Molnar:
- The biggest change is introduction of a new iteration of the
SCHED_FAIR interactivity code: the EEVDF ("Earliest Eligible Virtual
Deadline First") scheduler
EEVDF too is a virtual-time scheduler, with two parameters (weight
and relative deadline), compared to CFS that had weight only. It
completely reworks the base scheduler: placement, preemption, picking
-- everything
LWN.net, as usual, has a terrific writeup about EEVDF:
https://lwn.net/Articles/925371/
Preemption (both tick and wakeup) is driven by testing against a
fresh pick. Because the tree is now effectively an interval tree, and
the selection is no longer the 'leftmost' task, over-scheduling is
less of a problem. A lot of the CFS heuristics are removed or
replaced by more natural latency-space parameters & constructs
In terms of expected performance regressions: we will and can fix
everything where a 'good' workload misbehaves with the new scheduler,
but EEVDF inevitably changes workload scheduling in a binary fashion,
hopefully for the better in the overwhelming majority of cases, but
in some cases it won't, especially in adversarial loads that got
lucky with the previous code, such as some variants of hackbench. We
are trying hard to err on the side of fixing all performance
regressions, but we expect some inevitable post-release iterations of
that process
- Improve load-balancing on hybrid x86 systems: enable cluster
scheduling (again)
- Improve & fix bandwidth-scheduling on nohz systems
- Improve bandwidth-throttling
- Use lock guards to simplify and de-goto-ify control flow

threads except for the Xeon PHI platform which has four threads per
core
Though PowerPC has up to 16 threads per core and so far it's only
possible to control the number of enabled threads per core via a
command line option. There is some way to control this at runtime,
but that lacks enforcement and the usability is awkward
This update expands the sysfs interface and the core infrastructure
to accept numerical values so PowerPC can build SMT runtime control

- do IO grouping by blg_plug/blk_unplug again
- avoid unnecessary tree searches when processing stripes, in

As a bonus, io_uring can now process write completions in the caller's

io latency dramatically. IOWs, XFS should see a nice performance bump
for both IO paths.
Summary:
- Make large writes to the page cache fill sparse parts of the cache
with large folios, then use large memcpy calls for the large folio.
- Track the per-block dirty state of each large folio so that a
buffered write to a single byte on a large folio does not result in
a (potentially) multi-megabyte writeback IO.
- Allow some directio completions to be performed in the initiating
task's context instead of punting through a workqueue. This will
reduce latency for some io_uring requests"

Similar, mode changes for all files beneath /proc/<pid>/net/ are

Both issues come down to not using the generic proc_setattr() helper

"This adds the fchmodat2() system call. It is a revised version of the
fchmodat() system call, adding a missing flag argument. Support for
both AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW and AT_EMPTY_PATH are included.
Adding this system call revision has been a longstanding request but
so far has always fallen through the cracks. While the kernel
implementation of fchmodat() does not have a flag argument the libc
provided POSIX-compliant fchmodat(3) version does. Both glibc and musl
have to implement a workaround in order to support AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW
(see [1] and [2]).
The workaround is brittle because it relies not just on O_PATH and
O_NOFOLLOW semantics and procfs magic links but also on our rather
inconsistent symlink semantics.
This gives userspace a proper fchmodat2() system call that libcs can
use to properly implement fchmodat(3) and allows them to get rid of
their hacks. In this case it will immediately benefit them as the
current workaround is already defunct because of aformentioned
inconsistencies.
In addition to AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW, give userspace the ability to use
AT_EMPTY_PATH with fchmodat2(). This is already possible with
fchownat() so there's no reason to not also support it for
fchmodat2().
The implementation is simple and comes with selftests. Implementation
of the system call and wiring up the system call are done as separate
patches even though they could arguably be one patch. But in case
there are merge conflicts from other system call additions it can be
beneficial to have separate patches"

Merge tag 'v6.6-vfs.super' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs
Pull superblock updates from Christian Brauner:
"This contains the super rework that was ready for this cycle. The
first part changes the order of how we open block devices and allocate
superblocks, contains various cleanups, simplifications, and a new
mechanism to wait on superblock state changes.
This unblocks work to ultimately limit the number of writers to a
block device. Jan has already scheduled follow-up work that will be
ready for v6.7 and allows us to restrict the number of writers to a
given block device. That series builds on this work right here.
The second part contains filesystem freezing updates.
Overview:
The generic superblock changes are rougly organized as follows
(ignoring additional minor cleanups):
(1) Removal of the bd_super member from struct block_device.
This was a very odd back pointer to struct super_block with
unclear rules. For all relevant places we have other means to get
the same information so just get rid of this.
(2) Simplify rules for superblock cleanup.
Roughly, everything that is allocated during fs_context
initialization and that's stored in fs_context->s_fs_info needs
to be cleaned up by the fs_context->free() implementation before
the superblock allocation function has been called successfully.
After sget_fc() returned fs_context->s_fs_info has been
transferred to sb->s_fs_info at which point sb->kill_sb() if
fully responsible for cleanup. Adhering to these rules means that
cleanup of sb->s_fs_info in fill_super() is to be avoided as it's
brittle and inconsistent.
Cleanup shouldn't be duplicated between sb->put_super() as
sb->put_super() is only called if sb->s_root has been set aka
when the filesystem has been successfully born (SB_BORN). That
complexity should be avoided.
This also means that block devices are to be closed in
sb->kill_sb() instead of sb->put_super(). More details in the
lower section.
(3) Make it possible to lookup or create a superblock before opening
block devices
There's a subtle dependency on (2) as some filesystems did rely
on fill_super() to be called in order to correctly clean up
sb->s_fs_info. All these filesystems have been fixed.
(4) Switch most filesystem to follow the same logic as the generic
mount code now does as outlined in (3).
(5) Use the superblock as the holder of the block device. We can now
easily go back from block device to owning superblock.
(6) Export and extend the generic fs_holder_ops and use them as
holder ops everywhere and remove the filesystem specific holder
ops.
(7) Call from the block layer up into the filesystem layer when the
block device is removed, allowing to shut down the filesystem
without risk of deadlocks.
(8) Get rid of get_super().
We can now easily go back from the block device to owning
superblock and can call up from the block layer into the
filesystem layer when the device is removed. So no need to wade
through all registered superblock to find the owning superblock
anymore"

Merge tag 'v6.6-vfs.tmpfs' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs
Pull libfs and tmpfs updates from Christian Brauner:
"This cycle saw a lot of work for tmpfs that required changes to the
vfs layer. Andrew, Hugh, and I decided to take tmpfs through vfs this
cycle. Things will go back to mm next cycle.
Features
========
- By far the biggest work is the quota support for tmpfs. New tmpfs
quota infrastructure is added to support it and a new QFMT_SHMEM
uapi option is exposed.
This offers user and group quotas to tmpfs (project quotas will be
added later). Similar to other filesystems tmpfs quota are not
supported within user namespaces yet.
- Add support for user xattrs. While tmpfs already supports security
xattrs (security.*) and POSIX ACLs for a long time it lacked
support for user xattrs (user.*). With this pull request tmpfs will
be able to support a limited number of user xattrs.
This is accompanied by a fix (see below) to limit persistent simple
xattr allocations.
- Add support for stable directory offsets. Currently tmpfs relies on
the libfs provided cursor-based mechanism for readdir. This causes
issues when a tmpfs filesystem is exported via NFS.
NFS clients do not open directories. Instead, each server-side
readdir operation opens the directory, reads it, and then closes
it. Since the cursor state for that directory is associated with
the opened file it is discarded after each readdir operation. Such
directory offsets are not just cached by NFS clients but also
various userspace libraries based on these clients.
As it stands there is no way to invalidate the caches when
directory offsets have changed and the whole application depends on
unchanging directory offsets.
At LSFMM we discussed how to solve this problem and decided to
support stable directory offsets. libfs now allows filesystems like
tmpfs to use an xarrary to map a directory offset to a dentry. This
mechanism is currently only used by tmpfs but can be supported by
others as well.
Fixes
=====
- Change persistent simple xattrs allocations in libfs from
GFP_KERNEL to GPF_KERNEL_ACCOUNT so they're subject to memory
cgroup limits. Since this is a change to libfs it affects both
tmpfs and kernfs.
- Correctly verify {g,u}id mount options.
A new filesystem context is created via fsopen() which records the
namespace that becomes the owning namespace of the superblock when
fsconfig(FSCONFIG_CMD_CREATE) is called for filesystems that are
mountable in namespaces. However, fsconfig() calls can occur in a
namespace different from the namespace where fsopen() has been
called.
Currently, when fsconfig() is called to set {g,u}id mount options
the requested {g,u}id is mapped into a k{g,u}id according to the
namespace where fsconfig() was called from. The resulting k{g,u}id
is not guaranteed to be resolvable in the namespace of the
filesystem (the one that fsopen() was called in).
This means it's possible for an unprivileged user to create files
owned by any group in a tmpfs mount since it's possible to set the
setid bits on the tmpfs directory.
The contract for {g,u}id mount options and {g,u}id values in
general set from userspace has always been that they are translated
according to the caller's idmapping. In so far, tmpfs has been
doing the correct thing. But since tmpfs is mountable in
unprivileged contexts it is also necessary to verify that the
resulting {k,g}uid is representable in the namespace of the
superblock to avoid such bugs.
The new mount api's cross-namespace delegation abilities are
already widely used. Having talked to a bunch of userspace this is
the most faithful solution with minimal regression risks"

Pull vfs timestamp updates from Christian Brauner:
"This adds VFS support for multi-grain timestamps and converts tmpfs,
xfs, ext4, and btrfs to use them. This carries acks from all relevant
filesystems.
The VFS always uses coarse-grained timestamps when updating the ctime
and mtime after a change. This has the benefit of allowing filesystems
to optimize away a lot of metadata updates, down to around 1 per
jiffy, even when a file is under heavy writes.
Unfortunately, this has always been an issue when we're exporting via
NFSv3, which relies on timestamps to validate caches. A lot of changes
can happen in a jiffy, so timestamps aren't sufficient to help the
client decide to invalidate the cache.
Even with NFSv4, a lot of exported filesystems don't properly support
a change attribute and are subject to the same problems with timestamp
granularity. Other applications have similar issues with timestamps
(e.g., backup applications).
If we were to always use fine-grained timestamps, that would improve
the situation, but that becomes rather expensive, as the underlying
filesystem would have to log a lot more metadata updates.
This introduces fine-grained timestamps that are used when they are
actively queried.
This uses the 31st bit of the ctime tv_nsec field to indicate that
something has queried the inode for the mtime or ctime. When this flag
is set, on the next mtime or ctime update, the kernel will fetch a
fine-grained timestamp instead of the usual coarse-grained one.
As POSIX generally mandates that when the mtime changes, the ctime
must also change the kernel always stores normalized ctime values, so
only the first 30 bits of the tv_nsec field are ever used.
Filesytems can opt into this behavior by setting the FS_MGTIME flag in
the fstype. Filesystems that don't set this flag will continue to use
coarse-grained timestamps.
Various preparatory changes, fixes and cleanups are included:
- Fixup all relevant places where POSIX requires updating ctime
together with mtime. This is a wide-range of places and all
maintainers provided necessary Acks.
- Add new accessors for inode->i_ctime directly and change all
callers to rely on them. Plain accesses to inode->i_ctime are now
gone and it is accordingly rename to inode->__i_ctime and commented
as requiring accessors.
- Extend generic_fillattr() to pass in a request mask mirroring in a
sense the statx() uapi. This allows callers to pass in a request
mask to only get a subset of attributes filled in.
- Rework timestamp updates so it's possible to drop the @now
parameter the update_time() inode operation and associated helpers.
- Add inode_update_timestamps() and convert all filesystems to it
removing a bunch of open-coding"

Merge tag 'v6.6-vfs.fs_context' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs
Pull mount API updates from Christian Brauner:
"This introduces FSCONFIG_CMD_CREATE_EXCL which allows userspace to
implement something like
$ mount -t ext4 --exclusive /dev/sda /B
which fails if a superblock for the requested filesystem does already
exist instead of silently reusing an existing superblock.
Without it, in the sequence
$ move-mount -f xfs -o source=/dev/sda4 /A
$ move-mount -f xfs -o noacl,source=/dev/sda4 /B
the initial mounter will create a superblock. The second mounter will
reuse the existing superblock, creating a bind-mount (see [1] for the
source of the move-mount binary).
The problem is that reusing an existing superblock means all mount
options other than read-only and read-write will be silently ignored
even if they are incompatible requests. For example, the second mount
has requested no POSIX ACL support but since the existing superblock
is reused POSIX ACL support will remain enabled.
Such silent superblock reuse can easily become a security issue.
After adding support for FSCONFIG_CMD_CREATE_EXCL to mount(8) in
util-linux this can be fixed:
$ move-mount -f xfs --exclusive -o source=/dev/sda4 /A
$ move-mount -f xfs --exclusive -o noacl,source=/dev/sda4 /B
Device or resource busy | move-mount.c: 300: do_fsconfig: i xfs: reusing existing filesystem not allowed
This requires the new mount api. With the old mount api it would be
necessary to plumb this through every legacy filesystem's
file_system_type->mount() method. If they want this feature they are
most welcome to switch to the new mount api"
