Fix race when checking i_size on direct i/o read
So far I've had one ACK for this, and no other comments. So I think it
is probably time to send this via some suitable tree. I'm guessing that
the vfs tree would be the most appropriate route, but not sure that
there is one at the moment (don't see anything recent at kernel.org)
so in that case I think -mm is the "back up plan". Al, please let me
know if you will take this?
Steve.
---------------------
Following on from the "Re: [PATCH v3] vfs: fix a bug when we do some dio
reads with append dio writes" thread on linux-fsdevel, this patch is my
current version of the fix proposed as option (b) in that thread.
Removing the i_size test from the direct i/o read path at vfs level
means that filesystems now have to deal with requests which are beyond
i_size themselves. These I've divided into three sets:
a) Those with "no op" ->direct_IO (9p, cifs, ceph)
These are obviously not going to be an issue
b) Those with "home brew" ->direct_IO (nfs, fuse)
I've been told that NFS should not have any problem with the larger
i_size, however I've added an extra test to FUSE to duplicate the
original behaviour just to be on the safe side.
c) Those using __blockdev_direct_IO()
These call through to ->get_block() which should deal with the EOF
condition correctly. I've verified that with GFS2 and I believe that
Zheng has verified it for ext4. I've also run the test on XFS and it
passes both before and after this change.
The part of the patch in filemap.c looks a lot larger than it really is
- there are only two lines of real change. The rest is just indentation
of the contained code.
There remains a test of i_size though, which was added for btrfs. It
doesn't cause the other filesystems a problem as the test is performed
after ->direct_IO has been called. It is possible that there is a race
that does matter to btrfs, however this patch doesn't change that, so
its still an overall improvement.

change close_files() to use rcu_dereference_raw(files->fdt)
put_files_struct() and close_files() do rcu_read_lock() to make
rcu_dereference_check_fdtable() happy.
This looks a bit ugly, files_fdtable() just reads the pointer,
we can simply use rcu_dereference_raw() to avoid the warning.
The patch also changes close_files() to return fdt, this avoids
another rcu_read_lock()/files_fdtable() in put_files_struct().
I think close_files() needs more cleanups:
- we do not need xchg() exactly because we are the last
user of this files_struct
- "if (file)" should be turned into WARN_ON(!file)

introduce __fcheck_files() to fix rcu_dereference_check_fdtable(), kill rcu_my_thread_group_empty()
rcu_dereference_check_fdtable() looks very wrong,
1. rcu_my_thread_group_empty() was added by
844b9a8707f1 "vfs: fix
RCU-lockdep false positive due to /proc" but it doesn't really
fix the problem. A CLONE_THREAD (without CLONE_FILES) task can
hit the same race with get_files_struct().
And otoh rcu_my_thread_group_empty() can suppress the correct
warning if the caller is the CLONE_FILES (without CLONE_THREAD)
task.
2. files->count == 1 check is not really right too. Even if this
files_struct is not shared it is not safe to access it lockless
unless the caller is the owner.
Otoh, this check is sub-optimal. files->count == 0 always means
it is safe to use it lockless even if files != current->files,
but put_files_struct() has to take rcu_read_lock(). See the next
patch.
This patch removes the buggy checks and turns fcheck_files() into
__fcheck_files() which uses rcu_dereference_raw(), the "unshared"
callers, fget_light() and fget_raw_light(), can use it to avoid
the warning from RCU-lockdep.
fcheck_files() is trivially reimplemented as rcu_lockdep_assert()
plus __fcheck_files().

"This time, the biggest change is the work of representing hardware
thermal properties in device tree infrastructure.
This work includes the introduction of a device tree bindings for
describing the hardware thermal behavior and limits, and also a parser
to read and interpret the data, and build thermal zones and thermal
binding parameters. It also contains three examples on how to use the
new representation on sensor devices, using three different drivers to
accomplish it. One driver is in thermal subsystem, the TI SoC
thermal, and the other two drivers are in hwmon subsystem.
Actually, this would be the first step of the complete work because we
still need to check other potential drivers to be converted and then
validate the proposed API. But the reason why I include it in this
pull request is that, first, this change does not hurt any others
without using this approach, second, the principle and concept of this
change would not break after converting the remaining drivers. BTW,
as you can see, there are several points in this change that do not
belong to thermal subsystem. Because it has been suggested by Guenter
R that in such cases, it is recommended to send the complete series
via one single subsystem.
Specifics:

- fix a regression that the imx thermal driver breaks system suspend.

Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.14-rc1' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm
Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"As far as the number of commits goes, the top spot belongs to ACPI
this time with cpufreq in the second position and a handful of PM
core, PNP and cpuidle updates. They are fixes and cleanups mostly, as
usual, with a couple of new features in the mix.
The most visible change is probably that we will create struct
acpi_device objects (visible in sysfs) for all devices represented in
the ACPI tables regardless of their status and there will be a new
sysfs attribute under those objects allowing user space to check that
status via _STA.
Consequently, ACPI device eject or generally hot-removal will not
delete those objects, unless the table containing the corresponding
namespace nodes is unloaded, which is extremely rare. Also ACPI
container hotplug will be handled quite a bit differently and cpufreq
will support CPU boost ("turbo") generically and not only in the
acpi-cpufreq driver.
Specifics:
- ACPI core changes to make it create a struct acpi_device object for
every device represented in the ACPI tables during all namespace
scans regardless of the current status of that device. In
accordance with this, ACPI hotplug operations will not delete those
objects, unless the underlying ACPI tables go away.
- On top of the above, new sysfs attribute for ACPI device objects
allowing user space to check device status by triggering the
execution of _STA for its ACPI object. From Srinivas Pandruvada.
- ACPI core hotplug changes reducing code duplication, integrating
the PCI root hotplug with the core and reworking container hotplug.
- ACPI core simplifications making it use ACPI_COMPANION() in the
code "glueing" ACPI device objects to "physical" devices.
- ACPICA update to upstream version
20131218. This adds support for
the DBG2 and PCCT tables to ACPICA, fixes some bugs and improves
debug facilities. From Bob Moore, Lv Zheng and Betty Dall.
- Init code change to carry out the early ACPI initialization
earlier. That should allow us to use ACPI during the timekeeping
initialization and possibly to simplify the EFI initialization too.

xfs: allow logical-sector sized O_DIRECT
Some time ago, mkfs.xfs started picking the storage physical
sector size as the default filesystem "sector size" in order
to avoid RMW costs incurred by doing IOs at logical sector
size alignments.
However, this means that for a filesystem made with i.e.
a 4k sector size on an "advanced format" 4k/512 disk,
512-byte direct IOs are no longer allowed. This means
that XFS has essentially turned this AF drive into a hard
4K device, from the filesystem on up.
XFS's mkfs-specified "sector size" is really just controlling
the minimum size & alignment of filesystem metadata.
There is no real need to tightly couple XFS's minimal
metadata size to the minimum allowed direct IO size;
XFS can continue doing metadata in optimal sizes, but
still allow smaller DIOs for apps which issue them,
for whatever reason.
This patch adds a new field to the xfs_buftarg, so that
we now track 2 sizes:
1) The metadata sector size, which is the minimum unit and
alignment of IO which will be performed by metadata operations.
2) The device logical sector size
The first is used internally by the file system for metadata
alignment and IOs.
The second is used for the minimum allowed direct IO alignment.
This has passed xfstests on filesystems made with 4k sectors,
including when run under the patch I sent to ignore
XFS_IOC_DIOINFO, and issue 512 DIOs anyway. I also directly
tested end of block behavior on preallocated, sparse, and
existing files when we do a 512 IO into a 4k file on a
4k-sector filesystem, to be sure there were no unexpected
behaviors.

Pull clk framework changes from Mike Turquette:
"The first half of the clk framework pull request is made up almost
entirely of new platform/driver support. There are some conversions
of existing drivers to the common-clock Device Tree binding, and a few
non-critical fixes to the framework.
Due to an entirely unnecessary cyclical dependency with the arm-soc
tree this pull request is broken into two pieces. The second piece
will be sent out after arm-soc sends you the pull request that merged
in core support for the HiSilicon 3620 platform. That same pull
request from arm-soc depends on this pull request to merge in those
HiSilicon bits without causing build failures"

Pull ARM driver updates from Olof Johansson:
"Updates of SoC-near drivers and other driver updates that makes more
sense to take through our tree.
The largest part of this is a conversion of device registration for
some renesas shmobile/sh devices over to use resources. This has
required coordination with the corresponding arch/sh changes, and
we've agreed to merge the arch/sh changes through our tree.
Added in this branch is support for Trusted Foundations secure
firmware, which is what is used on many of the commercial Nvidia Tegra
products that are in the market, including the Nvidia Shield. The
code is local to arch/arm at this time since it's uncertain whether it
will be shared with arm64 longer-term, if needed we will refactor
later.
A couple of new RTC drivers used on ARM boards, merged through our
tree on request by the RTC maintainer.
... plus a bunch of smaller updates across the board, gpio conversions
for davinci, etc"

Pull ARM SoC board updates from Olof Johansson:
"This branch is reducing in size for every release since most
board-related changes have started happening in devicetrees now.
Still, we have some things going on here.
* Renesas platforms are still adding a bit more legacy device
support, something that should trail off shortly as they move to
full DT
* We group most defconfig updates into this branch out of old habits
* Removal of legacy OMAP2 platforms over to DT continues, and a
handful of old code is being removed here"
