Merge branch 'bond_hash'
Nikolay Aleksandrov says:
====================
This is a complete remake of my old patch that modified the bonding hash
functions to use skb_flow_dissect which was suggested by Eric Dumazet.
This time around I've left the old modes although using a new hash function
again suggested by Eric, which is the same for all modes. The only
difference is the way the headers are obtained. The old modes obtain them
as before in order to address concerns about speed, but the 2 new ones use
skb_flow_dissect. The unification of the hash function allows to remove a
pointer from struct bonding and also a few extra functions that dealt with
it. Two new functions are added which take care of the hashing based on
bond->params.xmit_policy only:
bond_xmit_hash() - global function, used by XOR and 3ad modes
bond_flow_dissect() - used by bond_xmit_hash() to obtain the necessary
headers and combine them according to bond->params.xmit_policy.
Also factor out the ports extraction from skb_flow_dissect and add a new
function - skb_flow_get_ports() which can be re-used.
v2: add the flow_dissector patch and use skb_flow_get_ports in patch 02
v3: fix a bug in the flow_dissector patch that caused a different thoff
by modifying the thoff argument in skb_flow_get_ports directly, most
of the users already do it anyway.
Also add the necessary export symbol for skb_flow_get_ports.
v4: integrate the thoff bug fix in patch 01
v5: disintegrate the thoff bug fix and re-base on top of Eric's fix

bonding: modify the old and add new xmit hash policies
This patch adds two new hash policy modes which use skb_flow_dissect:
3 - Encapsulated layer 2+3
4 - Encapsulated layer 3+4
There should be a good improvement for tunnel users in those modes.
It also changes the old hash functions to:
hash ^= (__force u32)flow.dst ^ (__force u32)flow.src;
hash ^= (hash >> 16);
hash ^= (hash >> 8);
Where hash will be initialized either to L2 hash, that is
SRCMAC[5] XOR DSTMAC[5], or to flow->ports which should be extracted
from the upper layer. Flow's dst and src are also extracted based on the
xmit policy either directly from the buffer or by using skb_flow_dissect,
but in both cases if the protocol is IPv6 then dst and src are obtained by
ipv6_addr_hash() on the real addresses. In case of a non-dissectable
packet, the algorithms fall back to L2 hashing.
The bond_set_mode_ops() function is now obsolete and thus deleted
because it was used only to set the proper hash policy. Also we trim a
pointer from struct bonding because we no longer need to keep the hash
function, now there's only a single hash function - bond_xmit_hash that
works based on bond->params.xmit_policy.
The hash function and skb_flow_dissect were suggested by Eric Dumazet.
The layer names were suggested by Andy Gospodarek, because I suck at
semantics.

tcp: sndbuf autotuning improvements
tcp_fixup_sndbuf() is underestimating initial send buffer requirements.
It was not noticed because big GSO packets were escaping the limitation,
but with smaller TSO packets (or TSO/GSO/SG off), application hits
sk_sndbuf before having a chance to fill enough packets in socket write
queue.
- initial cwnd can be bigger than 10 for specific routes
- SKB_TRUESIZE() is a bit under real needs in some cases,
because of power-of-two rounding in kmalloc()
- Fast Recovery (RFC 5681 3.2) : Cubic needs 70% factor
- Extra cushion (application might react slowly to POLLOUT)
tcp_v4_conn_req_fastopen() needs to call tcp_init_metrics() before
calling tcp_init_buffer_space()
Then we realize tcp_new_space() should call tcp_fixup_sndbuf()
instead of duplicating this stuff.
Rename tcp_fixup_sndbuf() to tcp_sndbuf_expand() to be more
descriptive.

fib_trie: avoid a redundant bit judgement in inflate
Because 'node' is the i'st child of 'oldnode',
thus, here 'i' equals
tkey_extract_bits(node->key, oldtnode->pos, oldtnode->bits)
we just get 1 more bit,
and need not care the detail value of this bits.
I apologize for the mistake.
I generated the patch on a branch version,
and did not notice the put_child has been changed.
I have redone the test on HEAD version with my patch.
two cases are used.
case 1. inflate a node which has a leaf child node.
case 2: inflate a node which has a an child node with skipped bits
test env:
ip link set eth0 up
ip a add dev eth0 192.168.11.1/32
here, we just focus on route table(MAIN),
so I use a "192.168.11.1/32" address to simplify the test case.

FQ rate limiting suffers from two problems, reported
by Steinar :
1) FQ enforces a delay when flow quantum is exhausted in order
to reduce cpu overhead. But if packets are small, current
delay computation is slightly wrong, and observed rates can
be too high.
Steinar had this problem because he disabled TSO and GSO,
and default FQ quantum is 2*1514.
(Of course, I wish recent TSO auto sizing changes will help
to not having to disable TSO in the first place)
2) maxrate was not used for forwarded flows (skbs not attached

Jeff Kirsher says:
====================
This series contains updates to ixgbevf, ixgbe and igb.
Don provides 3 patches for ixgbevf where he cleans up a redundant
read mailbox failure check, adds a new function to wait for receive
queues to be disabled before disabling NAPI, and move the API
negotiation so that it occurs in the reset path. This will allow
the PF to be informed of the API version earlier.
Jacob provides a ixgbevf and ixgbe patch. His ixgbevf patch removes
the use of hw_dbg when the ixgbe_get_regs function is called in ethtool.
The ixgbe patch renames the LL_EXTENDED_STATS and some of the functions
required to implement busy polling in order to remove the marketing
"low latency" blurb which hides what the code actually does.
Leonardo provides a ixgbe patch to add support for DCB registers dump
using ethtool for 82599 and x540 ethernet controllers.
I (Jeff) provide a ixgbe patch to cleanup whitespace issues seen in a
code review.
Todd provides for igb to add support for i354 in the ethtool offline
tests.
Laura provides an igb patch to add the ethtool callbacks necessary to
configure the number of RSS queues.

bonding: Fix broken promiscuity reference counting issue
Recently grabbed this report:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1005567
Of an issue in which the bonding driver, with an attached vlan encountered the
following errors when bond0 was taken down and back up:
dummy1: promiscuity touches roof, set promiscuity failed. promiscuity feature of
device might be broken.
The error occurs because, during __bond_release_one, if we release our last
slave, we take on a random mac address and issue a NETDEV_CHANGEADDR
notification. With an attached vlan, the vlan may see that the vlan and bond
mac address were in sync, but no longer are. This triggers a call to dev_uc_add
and dev_set_rx_mode, which enables IFF_PROMISC on the bond device. Then, when
we complete __bond_release_one, we use the current state of the bond flags to
determine if we should decrement the promiscuity of the releasing slave. But
since the bond changed promiscuity state during the release operation, we
incorrectly decrement the slave promisc count when it wasn't in promiscuous mode
to begin with, causing the above error
Fix is pretty simple, just cache the bonding flags at the start of the function
and use those when determining the need to set promiscuity.
This is also needed for the ALLMULTI flag

tcp: TSQ can use a dynamic limit
When TCP Small Queues was added, we used a sysctl to limit amount of
packets queues on Qdisc/device queues for a given TCP flow.
Problem is this limit is either too big for low rates, or too small
for high rates.
Now TCP stack has rate estimation in sk->sk_pacing_rate, and TSO
auto sizing, it can better control number of packets in Qdisc/device
queues.
New limit is two packets or at least 1 to 2 ms worth of packets.
Low rates flows benefit from this patch by having even smaller
number of packets in queues, allowing for faster recovery,
better RTT estimations.
High rates flows benefit from this patch by allowing more than 2 packets
in flight as we had reports this was a limiting factor to reach line
rate. [ In particular if TX completion is delayed because of coalescing
parameters ]
Example for a single flow on 10Gbp link controlled by FQ/pacing
14 packets in flight instead of 2

Note that sk_pacing_rate is currently set to twice the actual rate, but
this might be refined in the future when a flow is in congestion
avoidance.

xen-netback: improve ring effeciency for guest RX
There was a bug that netback routines netbk/xenvif_skb_count_slots and
netbk/xenvif_gop_frag_copy disagreed with each other, which caused
netback to push wrong number of responses to netfront, which caused
netfront to eventually crash. The bug was fixed in
6e43fc04a
("xen-netback: count number required slots for an skb more carefully").
Commit
6e43fc04a focused on backport-ability. The drawback with the
existing packing scheme is that the ring is not used effeciently, as
stated in
6e43fc04a.
skb->data like:
| 1111|
222222222222|3333 |
is arranged as:
|1111 |
222222222222|3333 |
If we can do this:
|
111122222222|
22223333 |
That would save one ring slot, which improves ring effeciency.
This patch effectively reverts
6e43fc04a. That patch made count_slots
agree with gop_frag_copy, while this patch goes the other way around --
make gop_frag_copy agree with count_slots. The end result is that they
still agree with each other, and the ring is now arranged like:
|
111122222222|
22223333 |
The patch that improves packing was first posted by Xi Xong and Matt
Wilson. I only rebase it on top of net-next and rewrite commit message,
so I retain all their SoBs. For more infomation about the original bug
please refer to email listed below and commit message of

ipc,msg: prevent race with rmid in msgsnd,msgrcv
This fixes a race in both msgrcv() and msgsnd() between finding the msg
and actually dealing with the queue, as another thread can delete shmid
underneath us if we are preempted before acquiring the
kern_ipc_perm.lock.
Manfred illustrates this nicely:
Assume a preemptible kernel that is preempted just after
msq = msq_obtain_object_check(ns, msqid)
in do_msgrcv(). The only lock that is held is rcu_read_lock().
Now the other thread processes IPC_RMID. When the first task is
resumed, then it will happily wait for messages on a deleted queue.
Fix this by checking for if the queue has been deleted after taking the

block: change config option name for cmdline partition parsing
Recently commit
bab55417b10c ("block: support embedded device command
line partition") introduced CONFIG_CMDLINE_PARSER. However, that name
is too generic and sounds like it enables/disables generic kernel boot
arg processing, when it really is block specific.
Before this option becomes a part of a full/final release, add the BLK_
prefix to it so that it is clear in absence of any other context that it
is block specific.
In addition, fix up the following less critical items:
- help text was not really at all helpful.
- index file for Documentation was not updated
- add the new arg to Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt
- clarify wording in source comments

mm/mlock.c: prevent walking off the end of a pagetable in no-pmd configuration
The function __munlock_pagevec_fill() introduced in commit
7a8010cd3627
("mm: munlock: manual pte walk in fast path instead of
follow_page_mask()") uses pmd_addr_end() for restricting its operation
within current page table.
This is insufficient on architectures/configurations where pmd is folded
and pmd_addr_end() just returns the end of the full range to be walked.
In this case, it allows pte++ to walk off the end of a page table
resulting in unpredictable behaviour.
This patch fixes the function by using pgd_addr_end() and pud_addr_end()
before pmd_addr_end(), which will yield correct page table boundary on
all configurations. This is similar to what existing page walkers do
when walking each level of the page table.
Additionaly, the patch clarifies a comment for get_locked_pte() call in the
function.

nilfs2: fix issue with race condition of competition between segments for dirty blocks
Many NILFS2 users were reported about strange file system corruption
(for example):
NILFS: bad btree node (blocknr=185027): level = 0, flags = 0x0, nchildren = 768
NILFS error (device sda4): nilfs_bmap_last_key: broken bmap (inode number=11540)
But such error messages are consequence of file system's issue that takes
place more earlier. Fortunately, Jerome Poulin <jeromepoulin@gmail.com>
and Anton Eliasson <devel@antoneliasson.se> were reported about another
issue not so recently. These reports describe the issue with segctor
thread's crash:
BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at

These two issues have one reason. This reason can raise third issue
too. Third issue results in hanging of segctor thread with eating of
100% CPU.
REPRODUCING PATH:
One of the possible way or the issue reproducing was described by
Jermoe me Poulin <jeromepoulin@gmail.com>:
1. init S to get to single user mode.
2. sysrq+E to make sure only my shell is running
3. start network-manager to get my wifi connection up
4. login as root and launch "screen"
5. cd /boot/log/nilfs which is a ext3 mount point and can log when NILFS dies.
6. lscp | xz -9e > lscp.txt.xz
7. mount my snapshot using mount -o cp=3360839,ro /dev/vgUbuntu/root /mnt/nilfs
8. start a screen to dump /proc/kmsg to text file since rsyslog is killed
9. start a screen and launch strace -f -o find-cat.log -t find
/mnt/nilfs -type f -exec cat {} > /dev/null \;
10. start a screen and launch strace -f -o apt-get.log -t apt-get update
11. launch the last command again as it did not crash the first time
12. apt-get crashes
13. ps aux > ps-aux-crashed.log
13. sysrq+W
14. sysrq+E wait for everything to terminate
15. sysrq+SUSB
Simplified way of the issue reproducing is starting kernel compilation
task and "apt-get update" in parallel.
REPRODUCIBILITY:
The issue is reproduced not stable [60% - 80%]. It is very important to
have proper environment for the issue reproducing. The critical
conditions for successful reproducing:
(1) It should have big modified file by mmap() way.
(2) This file should have the count of dirty blocks are greater that
several segments in size (for example, two or three) from time to time
during processing.
(3) It should be intensive background activity of files modification
in another thread.
INVESTIGATION:
First of all, it is possible to see that the reason of crash is not valid
page address:
NILFS [nilfs_segctor_complete_write]:2100 bh->b_count 0, bh->b_blocknr
13895680, bh->b_size
13897727, bh->b_page
0000000000001a82
NILFS [nilfs_segctor_complete_write]:2101 segbuf->sb_segnum 6783
Moreover, value of b_page (0x1a82) is 6786. This value looks like segment
number. And b_blocknr with b_size values look like block numbers. So,
buffer_head's pointer points on not proper address value.
Detailed investigation of the issue is discovered such picture:

IP: [<

Usually, for every segment we collect dirty files in list. Then, dirty
blocks are gathered for every dirty file, prepared for write and
submitted by means of nilfs_segbuf_submit_bh() call. Finally, it takes
place complete write phase after calling nilfs_end_bio_write() on the
block layer. Buffers/pages are marked as not dirty on final phase and
processed files removed from the list of dirty files.
It is possible to see that we had three prepare_write and submit_bio
phases before segbuf_wait and complete_write phase. Moreover, segments
compete between each other for dirty blocks because on every iteration
of segments processing dirty buffer_heads are added in several lists of
payload_buffers:
[SEGMENT 6784]: bh->b_assoc_buffers.next
ffff880218a0d5f8, bh->b_assoc_buffers.prev
ffff880218bcdf50
[SEGMENT 6785]: bh->b_assoc_buffers.next
ffff880218a0d5f8, bh->b_assoc_buffers.prev
ffff880222cc7ee8
The next pointer is the same but prev pointer has changed. It means
that buffer_head has next pointer from one list but prev pointer from
another. Such modification can be made several times. And, finally, it
can be resulted in various issues: (1) segctor hanging, (2) segctor
crashing, (3) file system metadata corruption.
FIX:
This patch adds:
(1) setting of BH_Async_Write flag in nilfs_segctor_prepare_write()
for every proccessed dirty block;
(2) checking of BH_Async_Write flag in
nilfs_lookup_dirty_data_buffers() and
nilfs_lookup_dirty_node_buffers();
(3) clearing of BH_Async_Write flag in nilfs_segctor_complete_write(),
nilfs_abort_logs(), nilfs_forget_buffer(), nilfs_clear_dirty_page().

ipc/sem.c: fix race in sem_lock()
The exclusion of complex operations in sem_lock() is insufficient: after
acquiring the per-semaphore lock, a simple op must first check that
sem_perm.lock is not locked and only after that test check
complex_count. The current code does it the other way around - and that
creates a race. Details are below.
The patch is a complete rewrite of sem_lock(), based in part on the code
from Mike Galbraith. It removes all gotos and all loops and thus the
risk of livelocks.
I have tested the patch (together with the next one) on my i3 laptop and
it didn't cause any problems.
The bug is probably also present in 3.10 and 3.11, but for these kernels
it might be simpler just to move the test of sma->complex_count after
the spin_is_locked() test.
Details of the bug:
Assume:
- sma->complex_count = 0.
- Thread 1: semtimedop(complex op that must sleep)
- Thread 2: semtimedop(simple op).
Pseudo-Trace:
Thread 1: sem_lock(): acquire sem_perm.lock
Thread 1: sem_lock(): check for ongoing simple ops
Nothing ongoing, thread 2 is still before sem_lock().
Thread 1: try_atomic_semop()
<<< preempted.
Thread 2: sem_lock():
static inline int sem_lock(struct sem_array *sma, struct sembuf *sops,
int nsops)
{
int locknum;
again:
if (nsops == 1 && !sma->complex_count) {
struct sem *sem = sma->sem_base + sops->sem_num;
/* Lock just the semaphore we are interested in. */
spin_lock(&sem->lock);
/*
* If sma->complex_count was set while we were spinning,
* we may need to look at things we did not lock here.
*/
if (unlikely(sma->complex_count)) {
spin_unlock(&sem->lock);
goto lock_array;
}
<<<<<<<<<
<<< complex_count is still 0.
<<<
<<< Here it is preempted
<<<<<<<<<
Thread 1: try_atomic_semop() returns, notices that it must sleep.
Thread 1: increases sma->complex_count.
Thread 1: drops sem_perm.lock
Thread 2:
/*
* Another process is holding the global lock on the
* sem_array; we cannot enter our critical section,
* but have to wait for the global lock to be released.
*/
if (unlikely(spin_is_locked(&sma->sem_perm.lock))) {
spin_unlock(&sem->lock);
spin_unlock_wait(&sma->sem_perm.lock);
goto again;
}
<<< sem_perm.lock already dropped, thus no "goto again;"
locknum = sops->sem_num;

mm/compaction.c: periodically schedule when freeing pages
We've been getting warnings about an excessive amount of time spent
allocating pages for migration during memory compaction without
scheduling. isolate_freepages_block() already periodically checks for
contended locks or the need to schedule, but isolate_freepages() never
does.
When a zone is massively long and no suitable targets can be found, this
iteration can be quite expensive without ever doing cond_resched().
Check periodically for the need to reschedule while the compaction free
scanner iterates.

fs/binfmt_elf.c: prevent a coredump with a large vm_map_count from Oopsing
A high setting of max_map_count, and a process core-dumping with a large
enough vm_map_count could result in an NT_FILE note not being written,
and the kernel crashing immediately later because it has assumed
otherwise.
Reproduction of the oops-causing bug described here:
https://lkml.org/lkml/2013/8/30/50
Rge ussue originated in commit
2aa362c49c31 ("coredump: extend core dump
note section to contain file names of mapped file") from Oct 4, 2012.
This patch make that section optional in that case. fill_files_note()
should signify the error, and also let the info struct in
elf_core_dump() be zero-initialized so that we can check for the
optionally written note.

revert "mm/memory-hotplug: fix lowmem count overflow when offline pages"
This reverts commit
cea27eb2a202 ("mm/memory-hotplug: fix lowmem count
overflow when offline pages").
The fixed bug by commit cea27eb was fixed to another way by commit
3dcc0571cd64 ("mm: correctly update zone->managed_pages"). That commit
enhances memory_hotplug.c to adjust totalhigh_pages when hot-removing
memory, for details please refer to:
http://marc.info/?l=linux-mm&m=

As a result, commit
cea27eb2a202 currently causes duplicated decreasing
of totalhigh_pages, thus the revert.
