  As for new features, there were a few, but nothing to write to LWN

  New function trigger called "dump" and "cpudump" that will cause
  ftrace to dump its buffer to the console when the function is called.
  The difference between "dump" and "cpudump" is that "dump" will dump
  the entire contents of the ftrace buffer, where as "cpudump" will only
  dump the contents of the ftrace buffer for the CPU that called the
  function.

  Another small enhancement is a new sysctl switch called
  "traceoff_on_warning" which, when enabled, will disable tracing if any
  WARN_ON() is triggered.  This is useful if you want to debug what
  caused a warning and do not want to risk losing your trace data by the
  ring buffer overwriting the data before you can disable it.  There's
  also a kernel command line option that will make this enabled at boot
  up called the same thing"

Revert "Makefile: Fix install error with make -j option"

This reverts commit d2aae8477cd00325bb7c7c7e95be488088900c48.

It is completely and utterly broken.  Module install should not build
any files, and adding broken dependencies to "help" it build files is
complete and utter sh*t.

The kernel should not be built by root, and "make install" and "make
module_install" (that for obvious reasons need to be run as root)
absolutely must not build any files.  They should only ever copy the
already-built files over.

So having dependencies for the install targets is wrong, wrong, wrong.

If you try to install a kernel without building it first, you *should*
get errors. The build system shouldn't try to help root build the files.

zswap: add to mm/

zswap is a thin backend for frontswap that takes pages that are in the
process of being swapped out and attempts to compress them and store
them in a RAM-based memory pool.  This can result in a significant I/O
reduction on the swap device and, in the case where decompressing from
RAM is faster than reading from the swap device, can also improve
workload performance.

It also has support for evicting swap pages that are currently
compressed in zswap to the swap device on an LRU(ish) basis.  This
functionality makes zswap a true cache in that, once the cache is full,
the oldest pages can be moved out of zswap to the swap device so newer
pages can be compressed and stored in zswap.

This patch adds the zswap driver to mm/

zbud: add to mm/

zbud is an special purpose allocator for storing compressed pages.  It
is designed to store up to two compressed pages per physical page.
While this design limits storage density, it has simple and
deterministic reclaim properties that make it preferable to a higher
density approach when reclaim will be used.

zbud works by storing compressed pages, or "zpages", together in pairs
in a single memory page called a "zbud page".  The first buddy is "left
justifed" at the beginning of the zbud page, and the last buddy is
"right justified" at the end of the zbud page.  The benefit is that if
either buddy is freed, the freed buddy space, coalesced with whatever
slack space that existed between the buddies, results in the largest
possible free region within the zbud page.

zbud also provides an attractive lower bound on density.  The ratio of
zpages to zbud pages can not be less than 1.  This ensures that zbud can
never "do harm" by using more pages to store zpages than the
uncompressed zpages would have used on their own.

This implementation is a rewrite of the zbud allocator internally used
by zcache in the driver/staging tree.  The rewrite was necessary to
remove some of the zcache specific elements that were ingrained
throughout and provide a generic allocation interface that can later be
used by zsmalloc and others.

This patch adds zbud to mm/ for later use by zswap.

[PATCH] sparc32: vm_area_struct access for old Sun SPARCs.

Commit e4c6bfd2d79d063017ab19a18915f0bc759f32d9 ("mm: rearrange
vm_area_struct for fewer cache misses") changed the layout of the
vm_area_struct structure, it broke several SPARC32 assembly routines
which used numerical constants for accessing the vm_mm field.

This patch defines the VMA_VM_MM constant to replace the immediate values.

arch: sparc: kernel: check the memory length before use strcpy().

For the related next strcpy(), the destination length is less than 512,
but the source maximize length may be 'OPROMMAXPARAM' (4096) which is
more than 512.

One work flow may:
  openprom_sunos_ioctl() ->  if (cmd == OPROMSETOPT)
    getstrings() ->  will alloc buffer with size 'OPROMMAXPARAM'.
    opromsetopt() ->  devide the buffer into 'var' and 'value'
      of_set_property() -> pass
        prom_setprop() -> pass
          ldom_set_var()

And do not mind the additional 4 alignment buffer increasing, since
'sizeof(pkt) - sizeof(pkt.header)' is 4 alignment at least.

SUNRPC: Fix a deadlock in rpc_client_register()

Commit 384816051ca9125cd54750e59c780c2a2655fa4f (SUNRPC: fix races on
PipeFS MOUNT notifications) introduces a regression when we call
rpc_setup_pipedir() with RPCSEC_GSS as the auth flavour.

By calling rpcauth_create() while holding the sn->pipefs_sb_lock, we
end up deadlocking in gss_pipes_dentries_create_net().
Fix is to register the client and release the mutex before calling
rpcauth_create().

ALSA: usb-audio: fix regression for fixed stream quirk

Commit 8f898e92aea2c24c7f379ee265d178f69ebb9c07 removed the redundant
reads of bInterfaceProtocol from the descriptors, but introduced a
regression to devices with quirks of type QUIRK_AUDIO_FIXED_ENDPOINT,
since fp->protocol is not set in setup process.

As a consequence, audio streams would not get initialized, as the
following logs show:

Use ecryptfs_dentry_to_lower_path in a couple of places

There are two places in ecryptfs that benefit from using
ecryptfs_dentry_to_lower_path() instead of separate calls to
ecryptfs_dentry_to_lower() and ecryptfs_dentry_to_lower_mnt().  Both
sites use fewer instructions and less stack (determined by examining
objdump output).

NFS: Allow nfs_updatepage to extend a write under additional circumstances

Currently nfs_updatepage allows a write to be extended to cover a full
page only if we don't have a byte range lock lock on the file... but if
we have a write delegation on the file or if we have the whole file
locked for writing then we should be allowed to extend the write as
well.

rpc_pipe: set dentry operations at d_alloc time

Currently the way these get set is a little convoluted. If the dentry is
allocated via lookup from userland, then it gets set by simple_lookup.
If it gets allocated when the kernel is populating the directory, then
it gets set via __rpc_lookup_create_exclusive, which has to check
whether they might already be set. Between both of these, this ensures
that all dentries have their d_op pointer set.

Instead of doing that, just have them set at d_alloc time by pointing
sb->s_d_op at them. With that change, we no longer want the lookup op
to set them, so we must move to using our own lookup routine.

nfs: set verifier on existing dentries in nfs_prime_dcache

nfs_prime_dcache currently only sets the verifier when it doesn't
initially a matching dentry in the dcache. Set the verifier in the case
where we do find a dentry in the dcache. This ensures that we don't
have to look up the dentry again if we want to use it after a readdir.

Reason for this crash is a gcc miscompilation in the fault handlers of
pa_memcpy() which return the fault address instead of the copied bytes.
Since this seems to be a generic problem with gcc-4.7.x (and below), it's
better to simplify the fault handlers in pa_memcpy to avoid this problem.

Here is a simple reproducer for the problem:

parisc: Ensure volatile space register %sr1 is not clobbered

I still see the occasional random segv on rp3440.  Looking at one of
these (a code 15), it appeared the problem must be with the cache
handling of anonymous pages.  Reviewing this, I noticed that the space
register %sr1 might be being clobbered when we flush an anonymous page.

Register %sr1 is used for TLB purges in a couple of places.  These
purges are needed on PA8800 and PA8900 processors to ensure cache
consistency of flushed cache lines.

The solution here is simply to move the %sr1 load into the TLB lock
region needed to ensure that one purge executes at a time on SMP
systems.  This was already the case for one use.  After a few days of
operation, I haven't had a random segv on my rp3440.

The latest PA-RISC Boot Loader (palo) allows loading of gzip compressed
vmlinuz kernels. So let's now switch to build a vmlinuz file when we
build a palo boot image.

parisc: fix LMMIO mismatch between PAT length and MASK register

The LMMIO length reported by PAT and the length given by the LBA MASK
register are not consistent. This leads e.g. to a not-working ATI FireGL
card with the radeon DRM driver since the memory can't be mapped.

Fix this by correctly adjusting the resource sizes.

drivers/net: caif: fix wrong rtnl_is_locked() usage

rtnl_is_locked() doesn't check who holds this lock, it just tells that it's
locked right now. if caif::ldisc_close really can be called under rtrnl_lock
then it should release net device in other context because there is no way
to grab rtnl_lock without deadlock.

This patch adds work which releases these devices. Also this patch fixes calling
dev_close/unregister_netdevice without rtnl_lock from caif_ser_exit().

vhost-net: fix use-after-free in vhost_net_flush

vhost_net_ubuf_put_and_wait has a confusing name:
it will actually also free it's argument.
Thus since commit 1280c27f8e29acf4af2da914e80ec27c3dbd5c01
    "vhost-net: flush outstanding DMAs on memory change"
vhost_net_flush tries to use the argument after passing it
to vhost_net_ubuf_put_and_wait, this results
in use after free.
To fix, don't free the argument in vhost_net_ubuf_put_and_wait,
add an new API for callers that want to free ubufs.

net: mv643xx_eth: do not use port number as platform device id

The port number is only local to the ethernet block, not global, so
there can be two ethernet blocks both using the same port, like
kirkwood with both using port 0.

Fix this by using the array index offset for the allocated platform
devices as the id.

net: sctp: confirm route during forward progress

This fix has been proposed originally by Vlad Yasevich. He says:

  When SCTP makes forward progress (receives a SACK that acks new chunks,
  renegs, or answeres 0-window probes) or when HB-ACK arrives, mark
  the route as confirmed so we don't unnecessarily send NUD probes.

Having a simple SCTP client/server that exchange data chunks every 1sec,
without this patch ARP requests are sent periodically every 40-60sec.
With this fix applied, an ARP request is only done once right at the
"session" beginning. Also, when clearing the related ARP cache entry
manually during the session, a new request is correctly done. I have
only "backported" this to net-next and tested that it works, so full
credit goes to Vlad.

virtio_net: fix race in RX VQ processing

virtio net called virtqueue_enable_cq on RX path after napi_complete, so
with NAPI_STATE_SCHED clear - outside the implicit napi lock.
This violates the requirement to synchronize virtqueue_enable_cq wrt
virtqueue_add_buf.  In particular, used event can move backwards,
causing us to lose interrupts.
In a debug build, this can trigger panic within START_USE.

Jason Wang reports that he can trigger the races artificially,
by adding udelay() in virtqueue_enable_cb() after virtio_mb().

However, we must call napi_complete to clear NAPI_STATE_SCHED before
polling the virtqueue for used buffers, otherwise napi_schedule_prep in
a callback will fail, causing us to lose RX events.

To fix, call virtqueue_enable_cb_prepare with NAPI_STATE_SCHED
set (under napi lock), later call virtqueue_poll with
NAPI_STATE_SCHED clear (outside the lock).

virtio: support unlocked queue poll

This adds a way to check ring empty state after enable_cb outside any
locks. Will be used by virtio_net.

Note: there's room for more optimization: caller is likely to have a
memory barrier already, which means we might be able to get rid of a
barrier here.  Deferring this optimization until we do some
benchmarking.

lib/scatterlist: error handling in __sg_alloc_table()

I was reviewing code which I suspected might allocate a zero size SG
table.  That will cause memory corruption.  Also we can't return before
doing the memset or we could end up using uninitialized memory in the
cleanup path.

scsi_debug: fix do_device_access() with wrap around range

do_device_access() is a function that abstracts copying SG list from/to
ramdisk storage (fake_storep).

It must deal with the ranges exceeding actual fake_storep size, because
such ranges are valid if virtual_gb is set greater than zero, and they
should be treated as fake_storep is repeatedly mirrored up to virtual
size.

Unfortunately, it can't deal with the range which wraps around the end of
fake_storep.  A wrap around range is copied by two
sg_copy_{from,to}_buffer() calls, but sg_copy_{from,to}_buffer() can't
copy from/to in the middle of SG list, therefore the second call can't
copy correctly.

This fixes it by using sg_pcopy_{from,to}_buffer() that can copy from/to
the middle of SG list.

This also simplifies the assignment of sdb->resid in
fill_from_dev_buffer().  Because fill_from_dev_buffer() is now only called
once per command execution cycle.  So it is not necessary to take care to
decrease sdb->resid if fill_from_dev_buffer() is called more than once.

lib/scatterlist: factor out sg_miter_get_next_page() from sg_miter_next()

This patchset introduces sg_pcopy_from_buffer() and sg_pcopy_to_buffer(),
which copy data between a linear buffer and an SG list.

The only difference between sg_pcopy_{from,to}_buffer() and
sg_copy_{from,to}_buffer() is an additional argument that specifies the
number of bytes to skip the SG list before copying.

The main reason for introducing these functions is to fix a problem in
scsi_debug module.  And there is a local function in crypto/talitos
module, which can be replaced by sg_pcopy_to_buffer().

This patch:

sg_miter_get_next_page() is used to proceed page iterator to the next page
if necessary, and will be used to implement the variants of
sg_copy_{from,to}_buffer() later.
