printk: Make CONSOLE_LOGLEVEL_QUIET configurable
The goal of passing the "quiet" option to the kernel is for the kernel
to be quiet unless something really is wrong.
Sofar passing quiet has been (mostly) equivalent to passing
loglevel=4 on the kernel commandline. Which means to show any messages
with a level of KERN_ERR or higher severity on the console.
In practice this often does not result in a quiet boot though, since
there are many false-positive or otherwise harmless error messages printed,
defeating the purpose of the quiet option. Esp. the ACPICA code is really
bad wrt this, but there are plenty of others too.
This commit makes CONSOLE_LOGLEVEL_QUIET configurable.
This for example will allow distros which want quiet to really mean quiet
to set CONSOLE_LOGLEVEL_QUIET so that only messages with a higher severity
then KERN_ERR (CRIT, ALERT, EMERG) get printed, avoiding an endless game
of whack-a-mole silencing harmless error messages.

printk: make sure to print log on console.
This patch make sure printing of log on console if loglevel
at time of storing log is less than current console loglevel.
@why
In SMP printk can work asynchronously, logs can be missed on console
because it checks current log level at time of console_unlock,
not at time of storing logs.
func()
{
....
....
console_verbose(); // user wants to have all the logs on console.
pr_alert();
dump_backtrace(); //prints with default loglevel.
...
console_silent(); // stop all logs from printing on console.
}
Now if console_lock was owned by another process, the messages might
be handled after the consoles were silenced.
Reused flag LOG_NOCONS as its usage is gone long back by the commit
5c2992ee7fd8a29d0412 ("printk: remove console flushing special cases
for partial buffered lines").
Note that there are still some corner cases where this patch is not enough.
For example, when the messages are flushed later from printk_safe buffers
or when there are races between console_verbose() and console_silent()
callers.

lib/test_printf.c: accept "ptrval" as valid result for plain 'p' tests
If the test_printf module is loaded before the crng is initialized, the
plain 'p' tests will fail because the printed address will not be hashed
and the buffer will contain "(____ptrval____)" or "(ptrval)" instead
(64-bit vs 32-bit).
Since we cannot wait for the crng to be initialized for an undefined

"(ptrval)" as a valid result and print a warning message.

- For cpustat, cgroup has a percpu hierarchical stat mechanism which
propagates up the hierarchy lazily.
This contains commits to factor out and generalize the mechanism so
that it can be used for other cgroup stats too.
The original intention was to update memcg stats to use it but memcg
went for a different approach, so still the only user is cpustat. The
factoring out and generalization still make sense and it's likely
that this can be used for other purposes in the future.
- cgroup uses kernfs_notify() (which uses fsnotify()) to inform user

Merge branch 'for-4.18' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/tj/libata
Pull libata updates from Tejun Heo:
- libata has always been limiting the maximum queue depth to 31, with
one entry set aside mostly for historical reasons. This didn't use to
make much difference but Jens found out that modern hard drives can
actually perform measurably better with the extra one queue depth.
Jens updated libata core so that it can make use of full 32 queue
depth
- Damien updated command retry logic in error handling so that it
doesn't unnecessarily retry when upper layer (SCSI) is gonna handle
them

Merge tag 'xfs-4.18-merge-3' of git://git./fs/xfs/xfs-linux
Pull xfs updates from Darrick Wong:
"New features this cycle include the ability to relabel mounted
filesystems, support for fallocated swapfiles, and using FUA for pure
data O_DSYNC directio writes. With this cycle we begin to integrate
online filesystem repair and refactor the growfs code in preparation
for eventual subvolume support, though the road ahead for both
features is quite long.
There are also numerous refactorings of the iomap code to remove
unnecessary log overhead, to disentangle some of the quota code, and
to prepare for buffer head removal in a future upstream kernel.
Metadata validation continues to improve, both in the hot path
veifiers and the online filesystem check code. I anticipate sending a
second pull request in a few days with more metadata validation
improvements.
This series has been run through a full xfstests run over the weekend
and through a quick xfstests run against this morning's master, with
no major failures reported.
Summary:
- Strengthen inode number and structure validation when allocating
inodes.
- Reduce pointless buffer allocations during cache miss
- Use FUA for pure data O_DSYNC directio writes
- Various iomap refactorings
- Strengthen quota metadata verification to avoid unfixable broken
quota
- Make AGFL block freeing a deferred operation to avoid blowing out
transaction reservations when running complex operations
- Get rid of the log item descriptors to reduce log overhead
- Fix various reflink bugs where inodes were double-joined to
transactions
- Don't issue discards when trimming unwritten extents
- Refactor incore dquot initialization and retrieval interfaces
- Fix some locking problmes in the quota scrub code
- Strengthen btree structure checks in scrub code
- Rewrite swapfile activation to use iomap and support unwritten
extents
- Make scrub exit to userspace sooner when corruptions or
cross-referencing problems are found
- Make scrub invoke the data fork scrubber directly on metadata
inodes
- Don't do background reclamation of post-eof and cow blocks when the
fs is suspended
- Fix secondary superblock buffer lifespan hinting
- Refactor growfs to use table-dispatched functions instead of long
stringy functions
- Move growfs code to libxfs
- Implement online fs label getting and setting
- Introduce online filesystem repair (in a very limited capacity)
- Fix unit conversion problems in the realtime freemap iteration
functions
- Various refactorings and cleanups in preparation to remove buffer
heads in a future release
- Reimplement the old bmap call with iomap
- Remove direct buffer head accesses from seek hole/data
- Various bug fixes"

Commit
6870c0165feaa5 ("scripts/faddr2line: show the code context")
radically altered the output format of the faddr2line tool. And while
the new list output format might have merit it broke my vim usage and
was hard to read.
Make the new format optional; using a '--list' argument and attempt to
make the output slightly easier to read by adding a little whitespace to
separate the different files and explicitly mark the line in question.

Merge branch 'irq-core-for-linus' of git://git./linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull irq updates from Thomas Gleixner:
- Consolidation of softirq pending:
The softirq mask and its accessors/mutators have many implementations
scattered around many architectures. Most do the same things
consisting in a field in a per-cpu struct (often irq_cpustat_t)
accessed through per-cpu ops. We can provide instead a generic
efficient version that most of them can use. In fact s390 is the only
exception because the field is stored in lowcore.
- Support for level!?! triggered MSI (ARM)
Over the past couple of years, we've seen some SoCs coming up with
ways of signalling level interrupts using a new flavor of MSIs, where
the MSI controller uses two distinct messages: one that raises a
virtual line, and one that lowers it. The target MSI controller is in
charge of maintaining the state of the line.
This allows for a much simplified HW signal routing (no need to have
hundreds of discrete lines to signal level interrupts if you already
have a memory bus), but results in a departure from the current idea
the kernel has of MSIs.

invalid value, and with not fully initializing struct siginfo. There
remains work to do on nds32, arc, unicore32, powerpc, arm, arm64, ia64
and x86 to get the code that generates siginfo into a simpler and more
maintainable state. Most of that work involves refactoring the signal
handling code and thus careful code review.
Also not included is the work to shrink the in kernel version of
struct siginfo. That depends on getting the number of places that
directly manipulate struct siginfo under control, as it requires the
introduction of struct kernel_siginfo for the in kernel things.
Overall this set of changes looks like it is making good progress, and

"This is the last couple of vfs bits to enable root in a user namespace

virtual filesystem like proc, but a filesystem where the unprivileged
user controls the content). The target filesystem for this work is
fuse, and Miklos should be sending you the pull request for the fuse
bits this merge window.
The two key patches are "evm: Don't update hmacs in user ns mounts"
and "vfs: Don't allow changing the link count of an inode with an
invalid uid or gid". Those close small gaps in the vfs that would be a
problem if an unprivileged fuse filesystem is mounted.
The rest of the changes are things that are now safe to allow a root
user in a user namespace to do with a filesystem they have mounted.
The most interesting development is that remount is now safe"

swait: strengthen language to discourage use
We already earlier discouraged people from using this interface in
commit
88796e7e5c45 ("sched/swait: Document it clearly that the swait
facilities are special and shouldn't be used"), but I just got a pull
request with a new broken user.
So make the comment *really* clear.
The swait interfaces are bad, and should not be used unless you have
some *very* strong reasons that include tons of hard performance numbers
on just why you want to use them, and you show that you actually
understand that they aren't at all like the normal wait/wakeup
interfaces.
So far, every single user has been suspect. The main user is KVM, which
is completely pointless (there is only ever one waiter, which avoids the
interface subtleties, but also means that having a queue instead of a
pointer is counter-productive and certainly not an "optimization").
So make the comments much stronger.
Not that anybody likely reads them anyway, but there's always some
slight hope that it will cause somebody to think twice.
I'd like to remove this interface entirely, but there is the theoretical
possibility that it's actually the right thing to use in some situation,
most likely some deep RT use.

driver doesn't have to do dmi matching on some Chromebook platforms.
- new Chromebook Tablet switch driver, which is useful for x86
convertible Chromebooks.
- other misc cleanup

blk-mq: return when hctx is stopped in blk_mq_run_work_fn
If a hardware queue is stopped, it should not be run again before
explicitly started. Ignore stopped queues in blk_mq_run_work_fn(),

Merge tag 'dma-mapping-4.18' of git://git.infradead.org/users/hch/dma-mapping
Pull dma-mapping updates from Christoph Hellwig:
- replace the force_dma flag with a dma_configure bus method. (Nipun
Gupta, although one patch is Ñ–ncorrectly attributed to me due to a
git rebase bug)
- use GFP_DMA32 more agressively in dma-direct. (Takashi Iwai)
- remove PCI_DMA_BUS_IS_PHYS and rely on the dma-mapping API to do the
right thing for bounce buffering.
- move dma-debug initialization to common code, and apply a few
cleanups to the dma-debug code.
- cleanup the Kconfig mess around swiotlb selection
- swiotlb comment fixup (Yisheng Xie)
- a trivial swiotlb fix. (Dan Carpenter)
- support swiotlb on RISC-V. (based on a patch from Palmer Dabbelt)
- add a new generic dma-noncoherent dma_map_ops implementation and use
it for arc, c6x and nds32.
- improve scatterlist validity checking in dma-debug. (Robin Murphy)
- add a struct device quirk to limit the dma-mask to 32-bit due to
bridge/system issues, and switch x86 to use it instead of a local
hack for VIA bridges.
- handle devices without a dma_mask more gracefully in the dma-direct
code.

gfs2: Iomap cleanups and improvements
Clean up gfs2_iomap_alloc and gfs2_iomap_get. Document how
gfs2_iomap_alloc works: it now needs to be called separately after
gfs2_iomap_get where necessary; this will be used later by iomap write.
Move gfs2_iomap_ops into bmap.c.
Introduce a new gfs2_iomap_get_alloc helper and use it in
fallocate_chunk: gfs2_iomap_begin will become unsuitable for fallocate
with proper iomap write support.
In gfs2_block_map and fallocate_chunk, zero-initialize struct iomap.
