25 the first version called Jade. He was
26 instrumental to the idea of a single set of flow
27 objects and multiple backend formats. James
28 carried the Jade project for several years until
29 it became a group project and got renamed
30 OpenJade. He is no longer participating to the
31 OpenJade project but his spirit still and will
32 always remain with us. He created most of the
33 Openjade code and the SGML/XML and the RTF
34 backends. But it is shorter to tell what he didn't
35 do than what he did :-)</font></dd>

37 <dd><font face="Arial">I am an old-time LaTeX user
38 and a scheme lover. My first jade hacking
39 experience was trying to use dsssl to produce
40 properly formatted indexes, realizing the need
41 for language-dependent string sorting. That code
42 is now part of OpenJade. Since I think that the
43 full power of DSSSL can only be explored with a
44 reasonably complete implementation, I am working
45 to fill the gaps in jade's coverage of the
47 <dt><font face="Arial"><strong>Avi Kivity:</strong></font></dt>
48 <dd><font face="Arial">I stumbled on Jade after
49 attempts to format SGML documents using C++
50 proved too cumbersome. I was impressed by the
51 power of DSSSL and the functional programming
52 style, which I hadn't used before. My main
53 interest is fully-integrated backends; that is,
54 formatters which do the layout themselves and do
55 not depend on external layout engines like TeX or
56 Word. I also maintain the CVS repository and
57 perform builds and releases. </font></dd>
58 <dt><font face="Arial"><strong>Didier PH Martin:</strong></font></dt>
59 <dd><font face="Arial">I encountered Jade simply by
60 browsing to find new ways to process XML/SGML
61 documents. I had to learn it without a book and
62 with minimal documentation. The more I know about
63 this environment the more I learn to appreciate
64 it. This is why, I am a fervant advocate of DSSSL,
65 OpenJade and work hard to provide to members of
66 the OpenJade community, a rich environment, an
67 adequate documentation, a future to this language.</font>
